Restoring the second of 11 pipes sent for restoration – an Arlington Imported Briar Dublin

A while back I was asked by a customer and friend, Jack to take on some projects for him. I have worked on a few pipes for him over the years so we seem to have a standing agreement that I will clean up his pipes. This time he sent a batch containing 11 pipes – six Bertrams, an Arlington, a GBD, an old WDC Triangle Bakelite and one marked Texaco. All of them were in various conditions and would need different types of work. I took a photo of the pipes before I started working on them.I chose to work on the Arlington Imported Briar Dublin next. This richly stained Saddle Stem Dublin is a beautiful pipe. It is clearly stamped on the left side of the shank and reads Arlington in script [over] Imported Briar. The grain around the bowl is highlighted by the stain and really stands out. It has a rich darker, reddish brown finish that is on the bowl and shank. It was filthy with dust and debris ground into the sides of the bowl. The rim top has a heavy lava overflow on the top and edges coming from a thick cake in the bowl. The saddle vulcanite push stem had some tooth marks and chatter on both sides ahead of the button. I took photos of the pipe before I started working on it. It really is another beauty. I took photos of the rim top and the stem to show the condition. You can see the thick cake in the bowl and overflow of lava on the rim top. The photos of the stem show the tooth marks and damage in the vulcanite on the top and underside ahead of the button.I took a photo of the stamping on the side of the shank to capture it. It was clear and readable as noted above. I removed the stem from the shank and took a photo of the parts.Before I started my work on the pipe itself I turned to Pipephil to get a quick overview of the background information on the Arlington brand (http://pipephil.eu/logos/en/logo-a7.html). The side bar stated that it was a brand of the Arlington Briar Pipe Corp. I have included a screen capture of the pertinent information below.I turned to Pipedia for more information (https://pipedia.org/wiki/Arlington). I quote the article below.

Arlington Briar Pipes Corporation was founded in 1919 in Brooklyn, New York, and produced the Arlington, Briarlee, Firethorn, Kimberly, Krona and Olde London brands among dozens of others, primarily acting as a subcontractor making pipes to be sold under other brand names. Among others, in the 1950’s, Arlington turned pipes for the famed Wilke Pipe Shop in New York City. The corporation was dissolved by the State of New York as inactive on December 6, 1978. Arlington Briar Pipe Corporation, located at 200 Kosciusko Street, Brooklyn, New York, registered only a single brand trademark, the Arlington brand, the trademark for which was applied for on November 13, 1962 and granted on February 25, 1964. Jack Kaye, of Arlington Briar, was also granted a patent for a combined mirror and stand in 1967.

According to José Manuel Lopes, “North American brand that belonged to Arlington Briar Pipes Corp., Brooklyn, New York, founded in 1919. In the 1940s, Ludwig Rosenberger gave the company new life, and it continued until the 70s. His son, Mel Rosenberger, has recently launched the DiMonte brand. Jack Uhle was also linked to Arlington.” Arlington, as far as known, mainly operated as a sub-contractor for other brands. The Jobey pipes are said to be made by Arlington at an unknown point of time. Arlington’s own pipes are seldom seen.

The article also included the following photo from an RTDA catalog. It is a great addition to the information above.I started my work on the pipe by reaming the bowl with a PipNet reamer. I used the first cutting head and took the cake back to bare briar. I cleaned up the reaming with a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife and removed all the remnants of the cake. I scraped the rim top with the flat edge of the blade at the same time and removed most of the thick lava build up. I sanded the walls of the bowl with a piece of dowel wrapped in 220 grit sandpaper. The walls look very good at his point in the process. I cleaned out the shank, the airway and the mortise with alcohol, cotton swabs, hard bristle and soft bristle pipe cleaners. It was a very dirty pipe which just meant that it had really been enjoyed by the previous pipe man. I cleaned the bone tenon and the inside of the airway in the stem with alcohol, cotton swabs and pipe cleaners in the same way as I did the shank. It also was very dirty.I scrubbed the exterior of the bowl and shank with a tooth brush and undiluted Murphy’s Oil Soap. I scrubbed the lava on the rim top and overflow on the outside of the bowl with the soap. I rinsed  the briar with warm water to remove the grime and debris of the scrubbing. It looked significantly better after the scrubbing. The darkening on the rim top is very clear. The darkening on the rim top and inner edge of the bowl would need to be dealt with. I cleaned up the inner edge with a piece of sandpaper. I sanded the top of the rim with the piece of 220 grit sandpaper and was able to remove the darkening.I finished that and moved on to it with 320-3500 grit sanding pads to finish the rim top and the bowl and shank. The briar began to take on a rich shine and the darkening on the top was gone. The photos tell the story. I polished the smooth rim top with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding it with 1200-15000 grit pads. I wiped the bowl down with a damp cloth after each sanding pad. The grain started to rise to the surface as I polished it. I rubbed the bowl and shank down with Before & After Restoration Balm to deep clean the finish on the bowl and shank. The product works to clean, enliven and protect the briar. I worked it in with my fingers to get it into the briar. I let it sit for 10 minutes then I wiped it off and buffed it with a soft cloth. The briar really began to have a rich shine. I took some photos of the bowl at this point to mark the progress in the restoration. It is a beautiful bowl. I turned my attention to the stem. I scrubbed the oxidized surface of the stem with Soft Scrub Cleanser and cotton pads. It took some elbow grease but it definitely looks better.I “painted” the surface of the vulcanite where the tooth marks were with the flame of a lighter. I filled in the deep tooth marks that remained with a rubberized Black CA glue. After it cured I flattened the repairs with a small flat file. I sanded the repairs further to flatten out the tooth chatter with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper. Progress was happening! I sanded the surface of the vulcanite with the 2 x 2 inch sanding pads – 320-3500 grit pads to remove the remaining oxidation. I dry sanded the surface until I have removed all of the oxidation and the stem started to really shine.I polished the stem with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding with 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped the stem down after each sanding pad with Obsidian Oil. I polished the stem with Before & After Pipe Stem Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine. I gave it a coat of Obsidian Pipe Stem Oil. It works to protect the stem from oxidizing. I set it aside to dry. I am excited to finish this Arlington Imported Briar Saddle Stem Dublin. I put the pipe back together and buffed it with Blue Diamond on the buffing wheel. I gave the bowl multiple coats of Conservator’s Wax and the stem multiple coats of carnauba wax. I buffed the pipe with a clean buffing pad to raise the shine and then by hand with a microfibre cloth to deepen it. It is fun to see what the polished bowl looks like with beautiful grain on the smooth portions and the rustication depths all around it. The polished grain on the pipe looks great with the black vulcanite stem. This Arlington Dublin is great looking and the pipe feels great in my hand. It is light and well balanced. Have a look at it with the photos below. The dimensions are Length: 6 inches, Height: 2 inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 3/8 inches, Chamber diameter: ¾ of an inch. The weight of the pipe is 31 grams/1.06 ounces. It is another beautiful pipe that I will send to Jack after I finish working on the other 9 pipes. I look forward to hear what he thinks of this next beauty. It should be a great smoking pipe.

Restoring the first of 11 pipes sent for restoration – an old Triangle WDC Bakelite Bent Bulldog

A while back I was asked by a customer and friend, Jack to take on some projects for him. I have worked on a few pipes for him over the years so we seem to have a standing agreement that I will clean up his pipes. This time he sent a batch containing 11 pipes – six Bertrams, an Arlington, a GBD, an old WDC Triangle Bakelite and one marked Texaco. All of them were in various conditions and would need different types of work. I took a photo of the pipes before I started working on them.I chose to work on the older Triangle WDC Bakelite Bent Bulldog first. This richly stained Bent Bulldog is a beautiful pipe. It is clearly stamped on the left side of the shank and reads Triangle [arched over] WDC in a triangle [over] BAKELITE. On the right side it is stamped at angle along the shank and reads Italian Briar. There is a diamond shaped silver coloured band on the shank end that is stamped and reads Oxford Plate [over] Made in U.S.A. It is oxidized but in good condition. The grain around the bowl is highlighted by the stain and really stands out. It has a rich darker, reddish brown finish that is on the bowl and shank. It was filthy with dust and debris ground into the sides of the bowl. The rim top has a heavy lava overflow on the top and edges coming from a thick cake in the bowl. The tapered Bakelite stem had a bone tenon that screwed into the shank. It had some deep tooth marks and chatter on both sides ahead of the button. I took photos of the pipe before I started working on it. It really is a beauty. I took photos of the rim top and the stem to show the condition. You can see the thick cake in the bowl and overflow of lava on the rim top. The photos of the stem show the tooth marks and damage in the Bakelite on the top and underside ahead of the button.I took photos of the stamping on the sides of the diamond shank to capture it. It was clear and readable as noted above. I tried to capture some of the stamping on the oxidized band as well. It is a little blurry but it is clear and readable under the oxidation. I removed the stem from the shank and took a photo of the parts. Before working on the pipe, I followed my usual procedure of looking for history on both the brand and the Triangle Bakelite line. I have included a quick history of the brand from Pipedia that is interesting and is helpful (https://pipedia.org/wiki/William_Demuth_Company).

William Demuth. (Wilhelm C. Demuth, 1835-1911), a native of Germany, entered the United States at the age of 16 as a penniless immigrant. After a series of odd jobs, he found work as a clerk in the import business of a tobacco tradesman in New York City. In 1862 William established his own company. The William Demuth Company specialized in pipes, smoker’s requisites, cigar-store figures, canes and other carved objects.

The Demuth Company is probably well known for the famous trademark, WDC in an inverted equilateral triangle. William commissioned the figurative meerschaum Presidential series, 29 precision-carved likenesses of John Adams, the second president of the United States (1797-1801) to Herbert Hoover, the 30th president (1929-1933), and “Columbus Landing in America,” a 32-inch-long centennial meerschaum masterpiece that took two years to complete and was exhibited at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893…

…In 1897 Ferdinand Feuerbach joined the Demuth company and by 1903 had become the production manager. Feuerbach is credited with developing Demuth’s popular Royal Demuth and Hesson Guard Milano pipelines. He left in 1919, when Sam Frank Sr. needed an experienced pipe man to run his pipe factory, located at 168 Southern Blvd., in the Bronx. Feuerbach and Frank had been close friends since Frank started his own business in 1900 and was closely associated with the sales staff of WDC, selling their line of pipes…

In early 1937, the City of New York notified S.M. Frank & Co. of their intent to take by eminent domain, part of the land on which the companies pipe factory was located. This was being done to widen two of the adjacent streets. As a result of this, Frank entered into negotiations to purchase the Wm. Demuth Co.’s pipe factory in the Richmond Hill section of Queens. It was agreed upon that Demuth would become a subsidiary of S.M. Frank and all pipe production of the two companies would be moved to DeMuth factory. New Corporate offices were located at 133 Fifth Avenue, NYC.

Demuth pipes continued to be made at the Richmond Hill plant till December 31. 1972. Then the Wm. Demuth Company met its official end as a subsidiary company by liquidation. Demuth’s mainstay pipe, the Wellington continued to be offered in the S.M. Frank catalog until 1976. In the mid-80’s, the Wellington even made a brief return as a direct to the consumer offer.

There was nothing specific on the Triangle Bakelite Line in the above article. I did a further Google search and found a link to an advertisement on the WDC Triangle Bakelite pipe that is quite interesting (https://farm1.static.flickr.com/198/460550444_b0cd63fa8f_o.jpg). I have included a copy of the file below.The above advertisement reads as follows:

WDC Triangle Pipes are as good as they are beautiful. They combine the WDC standard of goodness in the bowl, and the lasting beauty of a Triangle Bakelite bit.

There is no substance known to science more suitable for pipe stems, cigar and cigarette holders than Triangle Bakelite. It possesses all the advantages of natural amber but none of the failings.

It has the beautiful coloring of amber – brilliant, rich and translucent – but excels in that it is tougher and more durable than amber. It has neither taste nor odor and is non-flammable.

The bowls of the WDC Triangle Pipes are genuine French briar, specially Demuth seasoned and guaranteed against cracking or burning through.

Me who want something distinctive in a pipe will find a wide variety of select shapes of WDC Triangle Pipe, at the better grade shops, at $1.00 and up. Also a wide selection of cigar holders at 50c and up, and cigarette holders at 35c and up, in many beautiful shapes.

That tells a lot about the manufacture and marketing of WDC pipes. They were viewed as spectacular and unique. They were chosen by discriminating smokers and enjoyed with durability and flavor. Now it was time to work on this pipe.

I started my work on the pipe by reaming the bowl with a PipNet reamer. I used the first cutting head and took the cake back to bare briar. I cleaned up the reaming with a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife and removed all the remnants of the cake. I cleaned up the inner edge with a piece of sandpaper. I sanded the top of the rim and the sides of the cap with the piece of 220 grit sandpaper and was able to remove much of the darkening.I finished that and moved on to it with 320-3500 grit sanding pads to finish minimizing the burn damage and reshape the rim top and the top half of the bowl. The briar began to take on a rich shine and the burn damage was by and large gone. The photos tell the story. I polished the smooth rim top with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding it with 1200-15000 grit pads. I wiped the bowl down with a damp cloth after each sanding pad. The grain started to rise to the surface as I polished it. The rusticated portions looked very good as well. I rubbed the bowl and shank down with Before & After Restoration Balm to deep clean the finish on the bowl and shank. The product works to clean, enliven and protect the briar. I worked it in with my fingers to get it into the briar. I used a horsehair shoe brush to work it into the twin lines around the bull cap. I let it sit for 10 minutes then I wiped it off and buffed it with a soft cloth. The briar really began to have a rich shine. I took some photos of the bowl at this point to mark the progress in the restoration. It is a beautiful bowl. I polished the plated band with a jeweller’s cloth to protect the band from oxidizing and discolouring. I turned my attention to the stem. I filled in the deep tooth marks in the Bakelite with clear CA glue. After it cured I flattened the repairs with a small flat file. I sanded the repairs further to flatten out the tooth chatter with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper. Progress was happening! I sanded the surface of the vulcanite with the 2 inch sanding pads – 320-3500 grit pads to remove the remaining oxidation. I dry sanded the surface until I have removed all of the oxidation and the stem started to really shine.I polished the stem with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding with 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped the stem down after each sanding pad with Obsidian Oil. I polished the stem with Before & After Pipe Stem Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine. I gave it a coat of Obsidian Pipe Stem Oil. It works to protect the stem from oxidizing. I set it aside to dry. The final steps in my process involves using the buffer. I buffed the bowl and stem with Blue Diamond to polish out the light scratches in the briar and the vulcanite. I gave the bowl and the stem multiple coats of carnauba wax. I have found that I can get a deeper shine if I follow up the wax buff with a buff with a clean buffing pad. It works to raise the shine and then I hand buff with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. It is always fun for me to see what the polished bowl looks like with the polished stem. It really is a nice pipe. The smooth, nicely grained bowl sides and the rusticated blaze on the left bowl side looks great with the vulcanite stem. The Triangle WDC Bakelite taper stem Bent Bulldog feels great in my hand. It is a well-balanced pipe. Have a look at it with the photos below.  The dimensions are Length: 4 ½ inches, Height: 2 inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 inch, Chamber diameter: ¾ of an inch. The weight of the pipe is 1.16 ounces/32 grams. It is a beautiful pipe that I will send to Jack after I finish working on the other 10 pipes. I look forward to hear what he thinks of this old beauty. It should be a great smoking pipe.

A Wonderfully Long, Long, Long Pipe by Mark Tinsky

Recently, I was given the opportunity to purchase a small group of pipes by master pipemaker, Mark Tinsky. How could I say no? The answer, of course, is that I could not and I happily acquired them. There are some real beauties here and I am going to restore them all and then turn them over to you. Interestingly, all of the pipes are in the Canadian family of pipe shapes. I’m sure you’ll enjoy seeing them, and here is a link to the first one and the second one and the third one, in case you missed them. Let’s move on to the fourth pipe. This is a beautiful Canadian – well-proportioned bowl with a looooong, oval shank and a handsome taper stem made from acrylic. It’s incredibly long – even longer than the first three Tinsky pipes I worked on. It has a deep, rich brown colour to it and a lovely, smooth surface. There is a charming star logo on the top of the stem. Under the shank are the markings and they read: American [over] 10/99-MT. This tells us that the pipe was made in October 1999 by Mark Tinsky himself.As I’m sure you know, Mark Tinsky is one of the great names in American pipe making. He is best summed up in this quotation from Erwin Van Hove:

His more than reasonable prices, and his good-natured personality, have made Mark [Tinsky] the favorite of many Americans. It is difficult to find an amateur who does not possess at least one pipe made by the American Smoking Pipe Company, that Tinsky founded in 1978 with his friend Curt Rollar. In 1990, after the departure of his associate, Tinsky continued on by himself building a solid reputation using quality briar from Greece and stem blanks imported from Italy, offering collectors a vast assortment of models and finishes. In short, his pipes are beautiful and well-made pieces that produce a taste beyond reproach. Neither off-the-shelf nor haute couture, they are solid hand mades for an affordable price.There is a wonderful and extensive article on Tinsky, Rollar, and the American Smoking Pipe Company at Pipedia. I highly recommend reading it here. You can also visit his website: http://www.amsmoke.com/. There’s also a small blurb about him at Pipephil:This pipe was in generally very nice shape – there were a few nicks on the rim – and I could deal with that in short order. The stem was also in good shape – a few bit marks, but the acrylic was sound and is easy to repair. I used oil soap on a few cotton rounds and wiped down the stem to provide an initial cleaning before moving on to the next steps. The primary cleaning came next. I disinfected the inside of the stem with both pipe cleaners and cotton swabs dipped in lemon-infused 99% isopropyl alcohol. I scrubbed thoroughly to make sure the interior was very clean.I then set about fixing the marks and dents in the acrylic. This was done by filling those divots with black cyanoacrylate adhesive, impregnated with carbon and rubber. I left this to cure.Following that, I used all nine of the micromesh sanding pads (1,500 through 12,000 grit) to sand out flaws, even out the acrylic, and provide gentle polishing of the finished surface. I also applied pipe-stem oil while using the last five micromesh pads. There was a wonderful, deep black shine to the stem when I was done.As the stem was (nearly) complete, I moved on to the stummel. The first step was to ream out the bowl – that is to say, remove all the cake inside the bowl. This accomplished a couple of things. First (and most obviously), it cleaned the bowl and provided a refurbished chamber for future smoking. Second, when the old cake was removed, I could inspect the interior walls of the bowl and determine if there was damage or not. I used a pipe knife and a piece of sandpaper taped to a wooden dowel. Collectively, these ensured that all the debris was removed.Similar to the stem, I then cleaned the stummel with both pipe cleaners and cotton swabs dipped in lemon-infused 99% isopropyl alcohol. It took quite a bit of cotton to get clean. To tidy up the briar, I also wiped down the outside with some oil soap on cotton rounds. This did a good job of cleaning any latent dirt on the surface of the briar. The last step of the cleaning process was to scour the inside of the stummel with some soap and tube brushes. This was the culmination of a lot of hard work in getting the pipe clean.Having completed that, I was able to address the nicks on the rim. I dug out my iron and a damp cotton flannel cloth. By laying the cloth over the affected areas and applying the iron to it, the hot and moist steam can cause the wood to swell slightly and return to shape. There was some significant improvement! Not everything was removed, but most of it was. I also gave it a light topping on my topping board to finish off the rim. Unfortunately, I neglected to take a photo of this step.

I used all nine micromesh pads (1,500 through 12,000 grit) to sand the whole stummel. This sanding minimizes flaws in the briar and provides a beautiful smoothness to the wood. I rubbed some LBE Before & After Restoration Balm into the briar and let it sit for 30 minutes or so. The balm moisturizes the wood and gives a beautiful depth to the briar. I then buffed the stummel with a microfibre cloth. For the final step, I took the pipe to my bench polisher and carefully buffed it – first with a blue diamond compound, then with three coats of carnauba wax. This procedure makes the pipe look its best – the stummel sings and the stem glows.

All done! This Mark Tinsky 10-99 smooth Canadian looks fantastic again and is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner. I am pleased to announce that this pipe is for sale! Rebirthing a Damaged Jobey Gourd Calabash and Meerschaum Bowl

While I was in Idaho visiting my Dad last month I received an email from John about whether I could repair his Jobey Calabash. I have included the email below

Hello, I’m looking for a pipe repair shop. I have a Jobey Calabash pipe dropped it, and well it broke. I’m hoping I can send it to you for repair. Thank you, John

I wrote back and asked for photos to clarify what had broken when the pipe had dropped. I have visions of a cracked bow, a cracked gourd or even worse. I have learned to ask for photos before I make any commitment to repairing a pipe. John sent me the two photos below that show the condition of the break. It is probably the easiest break to deal with. In the drop the wooden dowel tenon that held the briar shank extension to the gourd had snapped off. It was a very clean break from what I could see in the photos. I could not see the condition of the bowl or the rest of the pipe but I figured that what he sent me was what was broken. It had a rusticated meerschaum bowl and a vulcanite stem that showed oxidation. I have included his photos below so you can see what I saw before I received the pipe. I explained to John what I saw and asked a few questions regarding cracks in the gourd or the briar shank extension is Jobey used. There were none that he could see. I told him to pack it up and send it to me and I would repair it. I was gone for about a month but yesterday at the end of week two at home the package arrived from John. It was a large box and when I opened it the pipe was well packed with bubble wrap. In the centre of the packing was two small bubble wrapped bundles. I removed the tape from them and removed the parts. The larger of the two was the gourd and the meerschaum bowl. The second, smaller bundle was the stem in the shank extension. I tried to remove the stem but it was solidly stuck in place. I examined the broken dowel tenon. It was indeed a clean break. There were some spots where the glue held remnants of the dowel on the surface of the briar and the wooden plug in the end of the gourd. I would need to flatten the spots before I tried to rejoin the parts. Here are some photos of the pipe.The bowl was 2/3s full with the last tobacco smoked in it. The dottle was dry and brittle. I took a photo of the bowl to show a bit of that and the tarry lava build up on the rim top and inner edge of the bowl as well as the thick cake in the meer bowl itself. It was quite a mess to look at and my wife and daughters commented about the smell. Ah well, such is the life of those who live with a pipe restorer/repair person. I took some photos of the bowl to give a sense of that look. In the second photo below, you can see the wooden plug and down in the shank of the gourd.I tried to remove the stem from the shank extension piece and it was frozen solid. I put it in the freezer for 30 minutes and when I took it out the stem turned easily from the extension. The photos show the stem in place solid and also once I had removed it. The stem was oxidized and had some deep tooth marks on both sides on the button edge and the ahead of the button. One of the deep marks on the topside was almost a bite through.I took a photo of the thick cake in the bowl and the overflow of lava on the rim top. It should clean up fairly well though the darkening in the rustication may remain. Before I started drill out the extension and the plug on the end of the calabash shank I took photos to show the alignment of the airway. The airway is not centred but it should be easy to open up and reset the fit.I used a cordless drill and a bit slightly larger than the airway in both parts. While the picture of the shank extension is out of focus you can see the principle in the photos of the drilling. I used the same bit in the gourd shank. Once it was open I stepped up one size in the drill bit to open the hole further. I once again have an out of focus photo of the shank extension but you can see the bit size in the photo of the gourd shank. The second drill bit opened the airway in both parts to the same size as the metal tubing I use to join them together. I measured the length of tube I needed so that the tube would not extend to deep in the mortise. I used a small vise to hold it while I cut the length with a hacksaw blade.I used a small round file to centre the airway in both the shank of the gourd and the extension. Once it was well centred I was good to start the process of joining the parts.I used the same type of All Purpose white glue as had been used previously on the tenon. I glued the metal tenon in place in the shank of the gourd and filled in the hollow around the tube with the glue. Once it had hardened I gave the glue a coat of clear CA glue to set the tube in place. I set the gourd aside to let the glue cure over night. In the morning when the glue was cured I painted the tubing with the glue as well as the end of the shank and the extension. I put the glue on a little heavy as I wanted it to bind well. I pressed the extension in place and aligned the Jobey brass logo on the left side in line with the shank. I clamped the extension in place until the glue cured and the shank extension was immovable. I set it aside to let it cure for the rest of the day. While the repair to the shank extension cured I turned my attention to the meerschaum cup or bowl. I carefully scarped out the thick cake with a sharp knife and worked over the rim top at the same time. I used a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife to further clean the cup so that the bowl was no longer sticky with the tars and oils of the tobacco. I also scraped out the gourd with the same tools as well as a brass bristle brush. It was much less sticky than it was before. I cleaned out the airway in the shank (carefully) as well as the inside of the bowl with alcohol and pipe cleaners – both bristle and smooth. I cleaned the airway in the stem at the same time. The pipe began to smell much better.I greased the cork gasket in the calabash with Vaseline. I rubbed it in with my fingertips and set the gourd aside to absorb the Vaseline. I worked some Before & After Restoration Balm into the surface of the briar shank extension and the gourd calabash. Once it was all covered with the product I let it sit for 10 minutes or more to do its magic. The product works to deep clean, restore and renew the gourd and briar. I wiped it down with a clean cloth and buffed it by hand. It looked very good. I set the gourd aside to dry and turned my attention to the meerschaum cup. I scrubbed it with a tooth brush and undiluted Murphy’s Oil Soap. I scrubbed the outside and inside of the bowl at the same time. I rinsed it with warm running water. The cup looked significantly better though still having some stains on the rustication. I set the bowl aside to air dry. I turn my attention to the stem. I scrubbed the surface of the stem with Soft Scrub Cleanser on cotton pads. I was able to remove the heavy oxidation. The rest would come off as I cleaned the stem.I checked to tooth marks on the stem surface. The deep one on the top of the stem was almost a bit through. In fact there may well have been a small hole. I greased a pipe cleaner with Vaseline and slipped it into the button airway. I filled in the tooth marks on both sides with black rubberized CA glue and set the stem aside for the repairs to cure.Once the repairs cured I used a small file to flatten the against the surface and clean up the sharp edge of the button. I sanded the repaired areas with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper to further flatten and blend them into the surface. I sanded the stem further with 2×2 inch sanding pads to smooth out the stem surface. I wiped it down with a damp cloth after each sanding pad. I took photos of the stem after the sanding.I polished the stem with micromesh sanding pads – wet sanding with 1500-12000 grit sanding pads. I wiped it down after each sanding pad with some Obsidian Oil. I finished polishing it with Before & After Pipe Stem Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine and buffed it off with a cotton cloth. I gave the gourd and the meerschaum bowl multiple coats of Clapham’s Soft Beeswax mixed with Carnauba. I let it dry and then buffed it with a soft cloth. It is a beautiful bowl. Normally at this point I put the stem back on the bowl and take the pipe to the buffing wheel to work it over. This time I took the parts to the buffing wheel. I gently buffed the meerschaum cup and rim with Blue Diamond to polish the meerschaum cup. I carefully buffed the gourd base and briar shank extension with Blue Diamond being cautious about the pressure I put on the gourd. I buffed the stem with Blue Diamond to raise the gloss on the vulcanite. I took the pipe back to the work table and gave the gourd and meerschaum bowl multiple coats of Clapham’s Beeswax paste. I gave the stem several coats carnauba wax. I buffed the parts of the pipe with a clean buffing pad to raise the shine. I hand buffed it with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The finished Jobey Meerschaum pipe is shown in the photos below. This one is heading back to John later this week so he can return it to his son. I think he will really enjoy the unique look of his new pipe. Thanks for looking.

Reclaiming a tired old Stanwell Bench Made 33 Bulldog with an oxidized Vulcanite shank extension

The next pipe is one I also worked on while I was at Jeff’s place in Idaho. I brought it home to finish it. We picked the pipe up from a seller in Macon, Georgia, USA on 03/08/2025. I would call the pipe a Bulldog shaped pipe with a vulcanite shank extension and a military style, vulcanite saddle stem. It is stamped on the left underside of the diamond shank and reads 33 (shape number) followed by Stanwell [over] Regd No. 969-48 [over] Bench Made. There is no other stamping on the shank. The bowl had a heavy cake and a thick coat of lava on the rim top. The finish was dirty and dusty with grime ground into the finish and in the twin rings around the cap. There were a few nicks in the finish from the journey the pipe had travelled since it was made. The vulcanite shank extension was oxidized and dirty. The military style vulcanite saddle stem sat well against the shank. It was dirty with oil and tar in the airway from the tenon to the button. There were deep tooth marks and chatter on both sides ahead of the button. There was a Crown S Stanwell logo on the topside of the stem. I took some photos of the pipe before I started my work on it. I took a photo of the bowl and rim top to show the cake in the bowl. The rim top had a thick coat of lava overflowing on top with some possible damage around the top and inner edge. I took photos of the top and underside of the stem showing the tooth marks and chatter on the vulcanite saddle stem surface as well as the heavy oxidation.The stamping is faint in spots but is readable in the photo below. It reads as noted above. I removed the stem from the shank and took a photo of the parts to show the parts of the pipe. The finish on the pipe is very worn and tired looking.I turned to do a bit of research on the Stanwell Bench Made line first to Pipephil’s site but unfortunately though there as some great information there, the Bench Made line is not shown on the site (http://www.pipephil.eu/logos/en/logo-stanwell.html).

I know that Pipedia has some great history (https://pipedia.org/wiki/Stanwell) on the brand so I turned there hoping to see the Bench Made. There was nothing on the line itself and no mention of the Bench Made pipes.

I turned to the article on designers and shape numbers to see if I could find data on the 33 Shape (https://pipedia.org/wiki/Stanwell_Shape_Numbers_and_Designers). I found that the shape had two versions with this shape number: a) Bent bulldog with a tapered stem and b) Quarter-bent tall bulldog with a diamond shank and push flared stem. The one I have in hand is closest to the b shape.

I knew that with the Regd. No. on the shank, the pipe was made in the period between 1948 and 1960. But I wanted to know more. I can find many examples of the Bench Made line online but no one   explains the meaning of the term. I can only surmise from going through the photos that the Bench Made was a higher end line of Stanwell made factory pipes. Perhaps the finishing is what distinguishes it from the rest of the brand offering. Do any of you readers have any information on this quandary? Post a response and let us in on the information.

Now it was time to work on the pipe. I started my work on the pipe by reaming it with a PipNet pipe reamer and cleaning up the reaming with a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife. I scraped the lava built up on the rim top with a small blade. It looked much better after the clean up. I cleaned out the inside of the shank and the airway in the stem with alcohol, pipe cleaners and cotton swabs. I removed the tars and oils with the cleaners and the alcohol. It was a dirty pipe!I scrubbed oxidation on the vulcanite shank extension with Soft Scrub All Purpose Cleanser. I have found that it does a remarkable job in softening and often removing the oxidation. Lot of elbow grease but it is effective. The photos show this step in the process. I scrubbed the surface of the bowl and shank with a tooth brush and undiluted Murphy’s Oil Soap to remove the debris and dust in the depths of the rustication. I cleaned out the shank again with a shank brush and the soap. I rinsed it with warm water. I dried off the briar with a soft cloth. It looked very good at this point in the process. After doing this I wondered if I should not have done this before the Soft Scrub. But oh well – hindsight is 20/20. I sanded the bowl, rim and shank extension with 320-3500 grit 2 x 2 inch sanding pads to minimise the scratches and marks in the surface of the briar and to further work on the oxidation on the vulcanite extension. I polished the bowl and the vulcanite shank end with 1500-12000 grit micromesh sanding pads to give it a deep shine. I wiped down the bowl and shank with an Obsidian Oil impregnated cloth after each pad. The briar and rubber began to shine! I worked some Before & After Restoration Balm into the surface of the briar with my fingertips and a horsehair shoe brush to get in the twin rings around the cap. The product works to clean, enliven and protect the briar. I let the balm sit for a little while and then buffed with a cotton cloth to raise the shine. The photos show the bowl at this point in the restoration process. I set the bowl aside and turned my attention to the stem. I scrubbed the surface with Soft Scrub Cleanser and cotton pads. I was able to remove much of the oxidation. The rest would come off using other tricks.I “painted” the stem surface with the flame of lighter to lift the tooth marks on the top and underside ahead of the button. It worked fairly well but some of the larger ones though they had come up a bit were still an issue.I filled in the deep tooth marks in the vulcanite with a rubberized black CA glue. Once the repairs cured I used a small file to flatten the against the surface and clean up the sharp edge of the button. I sanded the repaired areas with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper to further flatten and blend them into the surface. I sanded the stem further with 2×2 inch sanding pads to smooth out the stem surface. I wiped it down with a damp cloth after each sanding pad. I took photos of the stem after the sanding.I touched up the stamping on the top of the stem with white acrylic fingernail polish. Once it dried I scraped off the excess and cleaned up the area around the stamp with a 1500 grit sanding pad. It looked very clean. I polished the stem with micromesh sanding pads – wet sanding with 1500-12000 grit sanding pads. I wiped it down after each sanding pad with some Obsidian Oil. I finished polishing it with Before & After Pipe Stem Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine and buffed it off with a cotton cloth. I am excited to be finishing work this lovely Stanwell Bench Made 33 Bulldog pipe. This is the part of the restoration part I look forward to when it all comes back together, polished and waxed. I put the bowl and stem back together. I polished the bowl and stem with Blue Diamond to polish out the scratches in the briar and the vulcanite. I gave the bowl and the stem multiple coats of carnauba wax. I buffed the pipe with a clean buffing pad to raise the shine. I hand buffed it with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The pipe polished up pretty nicely. The medium brown stained bowl looks really good with the polished black vulcanite. This Stanwell Regd. No Bench Made 33 Bulldog was another fun pipe to work on. It really has that classic Danish look that catches the eye. The brown stain really makes the pipe look attractive. It is another comfortable pipe to hold in the hand. The finished pipe is shown in the photos below. The dimensions of the pipe are Length: 5 ½   inches, Height: 2 inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 ¼ inches, Chamber diameter: ¾ of an inch. A Long and Smooth Canadian by Mark Tinsky

Recently, I was given the opportunity to purchase a small group of pipes by master pipemaker, Mark Tinsky. How could I say no? The answer, of course, is that I could not and I happily acquired them. There are some real beauties here and I am going to restore them all and then turn them over to you. Interestingly, all of the pipes are in the Canadian family of pipe shapes. I’m sure you’ll enjoy seeing them, and here is a link to the first one and the second one, in case you missed them. Let’s move on to the third pipe. This is a beautiful Canadian – well-proportioned bowl with a looooong, oval shank and a handsome taper stem made from acrylic. It’s even longer than the first two Tinsky pipes I worked on. It has a deep, rich brown colour to it and a lovely, smooth surface. There is a charming star logo on the top of the stem. Under the shank are the markings and they read: American [over] 06/98-MT. This tells us that the pipe was made in June 1998 by Mark Tinsky himself.As I’m sure you know, Mark Tinsky is one of the great names in American pipe making. He is best summed up in this quotation from Erwin Van Hove:

His more than reasonable prices, and his good-natured personality, have made Mark [Tinsky] the favorite of many Americans. It is difficult to find an amateur who does not possess at least one pipe made by the American Smoking Pipe Company, that Tinsky founded in 1978 with his friend Curt Rollar. In 1990, after the departure of his associate, Tinsky continued on by himself building a solid reputation using quality briar from Greece and stem blanks imported from Italy, offering collectors a vast assortment of models and finishes. In short, his pipes are beautiful and well-made pieces that produce a taste beyond reproach. Neither off-the-shelf nor haute couture, they are solid hand mades for an affordable price.There is a wonderful and extensive article on Tinsky, Rollar, and the American Smoking Pipe Company at Pipedia. I highly recommend reading it here. You can also visit his website: http://www.amsmoke.com/. There’s also a small blurb about him at Pipephil:This pipe was in generally very nice shape – there were a few nicks on the rim – but that didn’t require too much work. The stem was also in good shape – only very light wear.I used oil soap on a few cotton rounds and wiped down the stem to provide an initial cleaning before moving on to the next steps. The primary cleaning came next. I disinfected the inside of the stem with both pipe cleaners and cotton swabs dipped in lemon-infused 99% isopropyl alcohol. I scrubbed thoroughly to make sure the interior was very clean.Following that, I used all nine of the micromesh sanding pads (1,500 through 12,000 grit) to sand out flaws, even out the acrylic, and provide gentle polishing of the finished surface. I also applied pipe-stem oil while using the last five micromesh pads. There was a wonderful, deep black shine to the stem when I was done.I moved straight on to the stummel. The first step was to ream out the bowl – that is to say, remove all the cake inside the bowl. This accomplished a couple of things. First (and most obviously), it cleaned the bowl and provided a refurbished chamber for future smoking. Second, when the old cake was removed, I could inspect the interior walls of the bowl and determine if there was damage or not. I used a piece of sandpaper taped to a wooden dowel. This ensured that the debris was removed – and it was very clean inside.I then cleaned the stummel with both pipe cleaners and cotton swabs dipped in lemon-infused 99% isopropyl alcohol. It took quite a bit of cotton to get clean.To tidy up the briar, I also wiped down the outside with some oil soap on cotton rounds and used a toothbrush in the crevices. This did a good job of cleaning any latent dirt on the surface of the briar. The last step of the cleaning process was to scour the inside of the stummel with some soap and tube brushes. This was the culmination of a lot of hard work in getting the pipe clean.Having completed that, I was able to address the nicks on the rim. I dug out my iron and a damp cotton flannel cloth. By laying the cloth over the affected areas and applying the iron to it, the hot and moist steam can cause the wood to swell slightly and return to shape. This worked superbly well.I used all nine micromesh pads (1,500 through 12,000 grit) to sand the whole stummel. This sanding minimizes flaws in the briar and provides a beautiful smoothness to the wood. I rubbed some LBE Before & After Restoration Balm into the briar and let it sit for 30 minutes or so. The balm moisturizes the wood and gives a beautiful depth to the briar. I then buffed the stummel with a microfibre cloth. For the final step, I took the pipe to my bench polisher and carefully buffed it – first with a blue diamond compound, then with three coats of carnauba wax. This procedure makes the pipe look its best – the stummel sings and the stem glows.

All done! This Mark Tinsky 06-98 smooth Canadian looks fantastic again and is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner. I am pleased to announce that this pipe is for sale! Clearing and Restoring a Clogged Brigham Made in Canada Bent Billiard

The next pipe on the table was one that the local pipe shop contacted me about repairing. I have included the email from the shop regarding this pipe. I quote:

Good evening Steve! Hope all is well. I’ve got yet another pipe here in need of your expertise! It’s a beautiful hundred year old (according to our client) Brigham 3 dot with something stuck in the stem. I included a few photos showing the issue and some of the more unique features of the pipe. If you’re available in the next little while, would it be possible to drop by? Cheers, Joe.

He included the following photos of the pipe. The third photo shows the item stuck in the shank. From the photo it appears to be the metal end of the Brigham Rock Maple Distillator. I have seen this happen before when the aluminum breaks off the wooden distillator. I could also see some corrosion to the aluminum tenon that held the distillator. I let Joe know that once I returned from my visit to my Father in the US I would let him know. Today, Joe dropped pipe by for my work. It was stamped on the underside of the shank and read 323 [followed by] Brigham [over] Made in Canada. The 323 was the shape number of the pipe. The style of the stamping would also help me identify when the pipe was made. The rusticated finish was classic Brigham. There was a thick cake in the bowl and some lava on the rim top. The rim top also had some nicks in the top and the front edge was damaged from knocking the pipe out against a hard surface. The bowl was slightly out of round. The clog in the shank did not allow the shank to be cleaned of the tars and oils and it was very dirty. The stem was oxidized and had tooth marks and chatter on both sides ahead of the button. The end of the metal tenon was also corroded and damaged. I would need to either smooth it out or replace the stem if I could. It had three brass dots on the left side of the taper. I took photos of the pipe before I worked on the pipe. I took close up photos of the bowl and rim top to show the condition of the bowl and damage to the rim edge as well as the cake and lava overflowing onto the rim top. I also took close up photos of the stem to show its condition as mentioned above.I took a photo of the stamping on the underside of the shank and it is very clear and readable. I took the stem off the shank and took a photo of the pipe to show the overall look of the pipe.For the needed background I am including the information from Pipedia on Brigham pipes. It is a great read in terms of the history of the brand (https://pipedia.org/wiki/Brigham_Pipes). Charles Lemon (Dadspipes) has written book on the history of the brand. This article is a good summary. I have included it below.

Roy Brigham, after serving an apprenticeship under an Austrian pipesmith, started his own pipe repair shop in Toronto, in 1906. By 1918 the business had grown to include five other craftsmen and had developed a reputation across Canada for the high quality of workmanship. After repairing many different brands of pipes over the years, Roy noted certain recurring complaints by pipe smokers, the most common referred to as “tongue bite”. Tongue bite is a burning sensation on the smoker’s tongue, previously thought to be due to the heat of the smoke (i.e. a “hot smoking pipe”).

He soon began manufacturing his own pipes, which were lightweight, yet featured a more rugged construction, strengthening the weak points observed in other pipes. The problem of tongue bite intrigued him, and he decided to make overcoming it a future goal.

About 1938, Roy’s son Herb joined him to assist in the business. The business barely survived the great depression because pipes were considered to be a luxury, not a necessity, and selling pipes was difficult indeed. In approximately 1937 [1], after some experimentation, Roy and Herb discovered that tongue bite was in fact a form of mild chemical burn to the tongue, caused by tars and acids in the smoke. They found that by filtering the smoke, it was possible to retain the flavour of the tobacco and yet remove these impurities and thereby stop the tongue bite.

Just as Thomas Edison had searched far and wide for the perfect material from which to make the first electric light bulb filaments, Roy & Herb began experimenting with many materials, both common and exotic, in the quest for the perfect pipe filter. Results varied wildly. Most of the materials didn’t work at all and some actually imparted their own flavour into the smoke. They eventually found just two materials that were satisfactory in pipes: bamboo and rock maple. As bamboo was obviously not as readily available, rock maple then became the logical choice.

They were able to manufacture a replaceable hollow wooden tube made from rock maple dowelling, which when inserted into a specially made pipe, caused absolutely no restriction to the draw of the pipe, yet extracted many of the impurities which had caused tongue bite. The result was indeed a truly better smoking pipe…

I then turned to a second article by Charles Lemon called, “A Closer Look at the Dots, Dates, and Markings of Brigham Pipes” to be able to pin down the time frame that the pipe was made in and to help interpret the stampings and shape number on the pipe. I quote the pertinent information below to establish the date on the pipe.

Around the late 1960s or early 1970s, at the beginning of what I’ve called the Canadian Era (roughly 1970 – 1980), the stampings changed again as Brigham moved to modernize its logo. Pipes are stamped with the 3-digit shape number and “Brigham” over “Made in Canada”. Note these two variants of this stamping.

The stamping on the one I am working on is like that shown in the photo below. From the information above I know that the pipe I am working on was made between the late 1960s and the 1980s which makes the pipe approximately 45-65 years old. Now it was time to work on the pipe. I decided to pull the metal blockage in the shank end. I knew it was broken off the Hard Maple Distillator. I tried to pull the metal piece with an ice pick and it was too tight in the shank to come out that easily! Always seems to be the case for me. I used drill bit slightly larger than the airway in the metal piece. I carefully turned it into the metal with a cordless drill. Once it bit I was able to pull it free from the shank. It is shown on the end of the drill bit in the first photo below and free of the bit in the second photo below.I reamed the bowl with a PipNet reamer. I used the first and second cutting heads and took the cake back to bare briar. I cleaned up the reaming with a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife and removed all the remnants of the cake. I scraped the rim top with the flat edge of the blade at the same time and removed most of the thick lava build up. I sanded the walls of the bowl with a piece of dowel wrapped in 220 grit sandpaper. The walls look very good at this point in the process. I cleaned out the shank, the airway and the deep mortise with alcohol, cotton swabs, hard bristle and soft bristle pipe cleaners. It was a very dirty pipe which just meant that it had really been enjoyed and used. I cleaned the inside of the aluminum tenon and the airway in the stem with alcohol, cotton swabs and pipe cleaners in the same way as I did the shank. It was clogged with debris and there was no airflow. It took some work with a paper clip but eventually it opened up so I could clean it well.I scrubbed the exterior of the bowl and shank with a tooth brush and undiluted Murphy’s Oil Soap. I scrubbed the lava on the rim top and overflow on the outside of the bowl with the soap. I rinsed the briar with warm water to remove the grime and debris of the scrubbing. It looked significantly better after the scrubbing. I cleaned up the inner edge of the rim and the rim top with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper. I removed the darkening as much as possible and smoothed out the top of the rim. I lightly topped the bowl on a topping board with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out the damage on the top and minimize the damage on the front outer edge. I sanded the rim top with 320-3500 grit sanding pads to remove the marks, scratches and darkening and to help shrink and minimize the damage on the front outer edge of the bowl. I used an oak stain pen to blend the top colour into the finished colour of the bowl once polished. It looks a bit darker at this point but it will match very well.I polished it with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding it with 1200-15000 grit pads. I wiped the bowl down with a damp cloth after each sanding pad. It began to look very good. While the damage on the front of the bowl is visible, in person it is less so. I rubbed the bowl and shank down with Before & After Restoration Balm to deep clean the finish on the bowl and shank. The product works to clean, enliven and protect the briar. I worked it in with my fingers to get it into the briar. I used a horsehair shoe brush to work it into the rustication around the bowl and shank. I let it sit for 10 minutes then I wiped it off and buffed it with a soft cloth. The briar really began to have a rich shine. I took some photos of the bowl at this point to mark the progress in the restoration. It is a beautiful bowl. I set the bowl aside and turned my attention to the stem. I scrubbed the oxidation on the stem with Soft Scrub cleanser and was able to remove a large amount of it. Even after cleaning the inside of the stem the airflow was still quite restricted. I had a hunch the other end of the hard Maple Distillator was stuck in the stem. It made sense. I worked on it with the wire and some bristle pipe cleaners and finally the piece of maple came free and the stem was open as it should have been.I sanded the area around the button edge and the remaining oxidation with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper. Progress was happening!I sanded the surface of the vulcanite with the 2 x 2 inch sanding pads. I dry sanded with each pad between the grits 320-3500. I worked on the surface until I had removed all of the oxidation and the stem started to really shine.I polished the stem with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding with 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped the stem down after each sanding pad with Obsidian Oil. I polished the stem with Before & After Pipe Stem Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine. I gave it a coat of Obsidian Pipe Stem Oil. It works to protect the stem from oxidizing. I set it aside to dry. I refit the damaged aluminum tenon with the new Brigham Rock Maple Distillator. It is a unique and cool smoking experience.The final steps in my process involve using the buffer. I buffed the bowl and stem with Blue Diamond to polish out the light scratches in the briar and the vulcanite. I gave the bowl and the stem multiple coats of carnauba wax. I have found that I can get a deeper shine if I follow up the wax buff with a buff with a clean buffing pad. It works to raise the shine and then I hand buff with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. It is always fun for me to see what the polished bowl looks like with the polished stem. It really is a nice pipe. The smooth tall bowl sides and the rusticated blaze on the left shank side looks great with the yellow acrylic stem. The Brigham 323 Bent Billiard with a vulcanite taper stem feels great in my hand. It is a well-balanced pipe. Have a look at it with the photos below. The dimensions are Length: 5 ½ inches, Height: 2 inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 ¼ inches, Chamber diameter: ¾ of an inch. The weight of the pipe is 1.62 ounces/46 grams. It is a beautiful pipe that I will soon be sending back to the local shop to give back to the owner. It is obviously one that he enjoys.

A Blast-from-the-Past Pipe by Mark Tinsky

Recently, I was given the opportunity to purchase a small group of pipes by master pipemaker, Mark Tinsky. How could I say no? The answer, of course, is that I could not and I happily acquired them. There are some real beauties here and I am going to restore them all and then turn them over to you. Interestingly, all of the pipes are in the Canadian family of pipe shapes. I’m sure you’ll enjoy seeing them, and here is a link to the first one in case you missed it. Let’s move on to the second pipe. This is a beautiful Canadian – well-proportioned bowl with a long, oval shank and a handsome taper stem made from acrylic. It’s a bit longer than the first one I worked on. It has a nice sandblast that as a wonderful, leathery feel to it. It’s obviously not made of leather, but the texture is really satisfying. There is a lovely star logo on the top of the stem. Under the shank are the markings and they read: American [over] 03/98-MT. This tells us that the pipe was made in March 1998 by Mark Tinsky himself.As I’m sure you know, Mark Tinsky is one of the great names in American pipe making. He is best summed up in this quotation from Erwin Van Hove:

His more than reasonable prices, and his good-natured personality, have made Mark [Tinsky] the favorite of many Americans. It is difficult to find an amateur who does not possess at least one pipe made by the American Smoking Pipe Company, that Tinsky founded in 1978 with his friend Curt Rollar. In 1990, after the departure of his associate, Tinsky continued on by himself building a solid reputation using quality briar from Greece and stem blanks imported from Italy, offering collectors a vast assortment of models and finishes. In short, his pipes are beautiful and well-made pieces that produce a taste beyond reproach. Neither off-the-shelf nor haute couture, they are solid hand mades for an affordable price.There is a wonderful and extensive article on Tinsky, Rollar, and the American Smoking Pipe Company at Pipedia. There’s also a small blurb about him at Pipephil:This pipe was in generally very nice shape – there were a few nicks on the rim – but that didn’t require too much work. In fact, the stem didn’t require any work from me at all! When I got this pipe, the stem was nowhere to be seen – there was only a stummel. So, I sent the pipe to Mark Tinsky and had him fashion a new stem for this pipe. The new stem is a perfect match from the man himself.I moved straight on to the stummel. The first step was to ream out the bowl – that is to say, remove all the cake inside the bowl. This accomplished a couple of things. First (and most obviously), it cleaned the bowl and provided a refurbished chamber for future smoking. Second, when the old cake was removed, I could inspect the interior walls of the bowl and determine if there was damage or not. I used a pipe knife and a piece of sandpaper taped to a wooden dowel. Collectively, these ensured that all the debris was removed – but it was very clean inside.I then cleaned the stummel with both pipe cleaners and cotton swabs dipped in lemon-infused 99% isopropyl alcohol. It took quite a while and much cotton to get clean.To tidy up the briar, I also wiped down the outside with some oil soap on cotton rounds and used a toothbrush in the crevices. This did a good job of cleaning any latent dirt on the surface of the briar. The last step of the cleaning process was to scour the inside of the stummel with some soap and tube brushes. This was the culmination of a lot of hard work in getting the pipe clean.Having completed that, I was able to address the nicks on the rim. I dug out my iron and a damp cotton flannel cloth. By laying the cloth over the affected areas and applying the iron to it, the hot and moist steam can cause the wood to swell slightly and return to shape. There was some significant improvement! Not everything was removed, but most of it was. I also gave it a light topping on my topping board to finish off the rim. I used all nine micromesh pads (1,500 through 12,000 grit) to sand the smooth rim and the smooth part of the shank. This sanding minimizes flaws in the briar and provides a beautiful smoothness to the wood. I rubbed some LBE Before & After Restoration Balm into the briar and let it sit for 30 minutes or so. The balm moisturizes the wood and gives a beautiful depth to the briar. I then buffed the stummel with a microfibre cloth. For the final step, I took the pipe to my bench polisher and carefully buffed it with three coats of conservator’s wax. This procedure makes the pipe look its best – the stummel sings and the stem glows.

All done! This Mark Tinsky 03-98 sandblasted Canadian looks fantastic again and is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner. I am pleased to announce that this pipe is for sale! A Terrific American-Canadian Pipe from Mark Tinsky

I used oil soap on a few cotton rounds and wiped down the stem to provide an initial cleaning before moving on to the next steps. The primary cleaning came next. I disinfected the inside of the stem with both pipe cleaners and cotton swabs dipped in lemon-infused 99% isopropyl alcohol. I scrubbed thoroughly to make sure the interior was very clean.As the stem was now clean and dry, I set about fixing the marks and dents in the acrylic. This was done by filling those divots with black cyanoacrylate adhesive, impregnated with carbon and rubber. I left this to cure and moved on.The penultimate step for the stem is sanding. First, with my set of needle files, I reduced the bulk of the cyanoacrylate repairs. I removed the excess adhesive as near to the surface as possible, without cutting into the acrylic. Following that, I used all nine of the micromesh sanding pads (1,500 through 12,000 grit) to sand out flaws, even out the acrylic, and provide gentle polishing of the finished surface. I also applied pipe-stem oil while using the last five micromesh pads. There was a wonderful, deep black shine to the stem when I was done.As the stem was (nearly) complete, I moved on to the stummel. The first step was to ream out the bowl – that is to say, remove all the cake inside the bowl. This accomplished a couple of things. Restoring a Father’s Legacy of 10 Brigham Pipes Gathered throughout his life #7

Last month I was contacted by Donna to see if I knew anyone interested in purchasing her father’s pipes. She wrote as follows: “I am wondering if you would be interested in my father’s collection of Brighams.” She further spelled out what he had in the collection. He had 1 – 2 dot pipe, 3 – 3 dot pipes, 2 – 4 dot pipes and 4 – 5 dot pipes. There was a total of 10 pipes. I asked for a photo of the pipes and she sent the photo below. I was very interested.We emailed back and forth and the short story is that I paid for the collection and she shipped the pipes to me. On Tuesday after Easter the box arrived and I was happy to be able to see them up close. They were obviously well-loved pipes and in varying degrees of needing work. I wrote her and told I received them and that I was pleased with the lot. I was looking forward to working on them. She aske me to send her photos along the way as I finished the pipes. I will be sending her the links to the blog so she can see the work and the process of bringing them back to a semblance of their original beauty. The seventh pipe I have chosen to work on from the lot was the one sitting three down on the left column in the photo above. I would call the pipe a Bent Billiard shaped pipe with a vulcanite taper stem. It is stamped on the underside of the shank and reads Brigham in script on the rustication. There is no shape number that I can see. It appears to be a Brigham Sportsman pipe – rough finished or even a bit unfinished in carving. From the cake in the bowl and the other pipes I could tell her Dad loved aromatic tobaccos. This pipe was heavily caked with an overflow of lava on the rim top and on the inner and outer edges of the bowl. There was burn damage on the rim top and inner edge on the front of the bowl. The rim top had some rustication areas on the front and back that are dark in the photos. The shank end even that had a coating of tar build up. The finish was smooth with a rusticated panel on the left side of the bowl. The finish was incomplete – rusticated, smooth, rough and uncarved portions. The stem did not sit all the way in the shank so I assumed it was very dirty in the shank. I removed the stem and the Hard Rock Maple Distillator that was missing from the tenon. The shank was black, tarry and oily. The stem was dirty, calcified and oxidized with thick oil and tar in the airway from the tenon to the button. There were light tooth marks and chatter on both sides ahead of the button. The left side of the taper stem bore three brass. That would also help with identifying the pipe. I took some photos of the pipe before I started my work on it. I took a photo of the bowl and rim top to show the cake in the bowl. The rim top had a thick coat of lava overflowing down the crowned top with heavy burn damage around the top, inner and outer edge. I took photos of the top and underside of the stem showing the light tooth chatter on the vulcanite stem surface. It is heavily oxidized and calcified and is quite dirty on the surface of the vulcanite.The stamping is very, very faint and hard to read in the photo below. With a bright light and lens, it reads as noted above. I removed the stem from the shank and took a photo of the parts to show the parts of the pipe. The finish on the pipe is very worn and tired looking. The brass dots on the stem are hidden under the grime and oxidation.For the needed background I am including the information from Pipedia on Brigham pipes. It is a great read in terms of the history of the brand (https://pipedia.org/wiki/Brigham_Pipes). Charles Lemon (Dadspipes) has written book on the history of the brand and well worth the price. The Pipedia article is a good summary.

I turned to Charles Lemon’s book, Brigham Pipes A Century of Canadian Briar, page 24-25. I quote the section on Brigham Sportsman Pipes below:

The Toronto Sportsman’s Show has been an annual tradition since the late 1940s, catering to all manner of outdoor pursuit. Brigham began renting a booth at the show in the early 1950’s and created the Sportsman series of rugged, rough-and-ready pipes available exclusively at the Sportsman’s Show.

The Sportsman pipes were essentially semi-shaped (or half-finished) briar bowls with vulcanite stems, complete with the Brigham System. The smoking characteristics of the Sportsman models were identical to regular Brigham pipes, and the rough exterior and simple wax finish gave the series a rugged, outdoorsy appearance that many pipe smokers found appealing.

Special show prices allowed pipe smokers to buy a 4-Dot pipe for the price of a 3-Dot pipe, a 3-Dot pipe for the price of a 2-Dot pipe, or a 2-Dot pipe for the price of a 1-Dot pipe. Soon Sportsman pipes could be found in golf bags, backpacks, tackle boxes, and camping trailers across the country.

Initially available only at the annual Toronto Sportsman Show, retailers began requesting Sportsman models to sell in their shops. Alphie’s in Timmons, ON, has claimed the honour of being the first retail shop to carry the semi-finished Sportsman line. Others soon followed, including Albion Smoke and Gift Shop, though the pipes remained available only for a short period in the Spring of each year.

A good number or Brigham Sportsman pipes can be found on the estate market, in a multitude of shapes and sizes ranging from the basic Billiards to rough-carved versions of Brigham’s freehand-style pipes.

Brigham continued to sell Sportsman pipes at both the Toronto Sportsman’s Show and through its independent retailers until the late 1990s when the company began winding down domestic production. Demand for the rugged, semi-shaped pipes remained strong, however, and in 2011, Brigham relaunched the line using rough-carved pipes from its European producers.

I then turned to the Pipedia article by Charles Lemon called, “A Closer Look at the Dots, Dates, and Markings of Brigham Pipes” to be able to pin down the time frame that the pipe was made in and to help interpret the stampings and shape number on the pipe. I have dubbed the decades between 1980 and 2000 the Late Canadian Era, a period that saw several changes at Brigham that are of note to the collector. First, the traditional 8-grade pinning system (the famous Brigham “Dots” which denoted the quality of the pipe) was changed to a 7-grade system to simplify pinning (more on this below), and the Norsemen and Valhalla series were merged to form the President Series, which represented the very finest pipes coming out of the Toronto factory. Early pipes from this era (left, below) are stamped with a shape number and “Brigham” over “Canada”; later pipes (late 1980s+, on right below) are stamped simply with a shape number and the Brigham logo.

I knew that the pipe I was working on was from the Sportsman Line and was probably made between the 1980s-1990s. It sports 3 dot Sportsman Series pipe which gives the grade of the pipe. There is not a shape number on the pipe. Now to do a bit of spiffing with the pipe itself.

I started my work on the pipe by reaming the bowl with a PipNet reamer. I used the first and second cutting heads and took the cake back to bare briar. I cleaned up the reaming with a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife and removed all the remnants of the cake. I scraped the rim top with the flat edge of the blade at the same time and removed most of the thick lava build up. I sanded the walls of the bowl with a piece of dowel wrapped in 220 grit sandpaper. The walls look very good at his point in the process. I cleaned out the shank, the airway and the deep mortise with alcohol, cotton swabs, hard bristle and soft bristle pipe cleaners. It was a very dirty pipe which just meant that Donna’s Dad had really enjoyed and used this pipe. I cleaned the inside of the aluminum tenon and the airway in the stem with alcohol, cotton swabs and pipe cleaners in the same way as I did the shank. It also was very dirty.I scrubbed the exterior of the bowl and shank with a tooth brush and undiluted Murphy’s Oil Soap. I scrubbed the lava on the rim top and overflow on the outside of the bowl with the soap. I rinsed  the briar with warm water to remove the grime and debris of the scrubbing. It looked significantly better after the scrubbing. The damage on the bowl front and rim top is very clear. The burn damage on the front of the rim top, the outer and the inner bevelled edge were going to take a lot of shaping work. There was a spot on the top of the rim toward the front appeared to be a flaw in the briar. I cleaned up the inner edge with a piece of sandpaper. I topped the bowl on a 220 grit sheet of sandpaper on a topping board. I used a piece of 220 grit sandpaper and a half wooden sphere to clean up the inner and bevel it slightly. I finished that and moved on to it with 320-3500 grit sanding pads to finish minimizing the burn damage and reshape the rim top and the top half of the bowl. The briar began to take on a rich shine and the burn damage was by and large gone. The photos tell the story. I polished the smooth rim top with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding it with 1200-15000 grit pads. I wiped the bowl down with a damp cloth after each sanding pad. The grain started to rise to the surface as I polished it. The rusticated portions looked very good as well. I rubbed the bowl and shank down with Before & After Restoration Balm to deep clean the finish on the bowl and shank. The product works to clean, enliven and protect the briar. I worked it in with my fingers to get it into the briar. I used a horsehair shoe brush to work it into the rusticated portions. I let it sit for 10 minutes then I wiped it off and buffed it with a soft cloth. The briar really began to have a rich shine. I took some photos of the bowl at this point to mark the progress in the restoration. It is a beautiful bowl. I sanded the calcification, oxidation and tooth chatter with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper. Progress was happening! I sanded the surface of the vulcanite with the 2 inch sanding pads – 320-3500 grit pads to remove the remaining oxidation. I dry sanded the surface until I have removed all of the oxidation and the stem started to really shine.I refit the aluminum tenon with the new Brigham Rock Maple Distillator.
