What a beautiful Hans Original Hand Made UFO

This interesting UFO/Flying Saucer/Disc shaped pipe was purchased from a sell in Chicago, Illinois, USA on 06/05/2021. It is a darkly stained briar with great grain around the bowl and shank. There is a thin 14K gold band on the shank and a vulcanite saddle stem. The smooth finished bowl has some great grain on it under the heavy grime on the surface. The bowl was thickly caked with a light lava coat on the rim top. It was hard to know the condition of the inner edge and rim top underneath the lava but cleaning that up will tell the story. The pipe is stamped on the underside of the shank and reads in script etching Hans Original [over] 6 [over] Hand Made. The “E” on Made is under the band. The gold band is stamped 14K on the topside. The vulcanite stem ha two brass dots side by side on the left side of the saddle. It had light tooth marks and chatter on both sides ahead of the button. It had a flattened heel on the bowl that allowed the pipe to sit on a desk top. Jeff took photos of it before he worked his magic in the cleanup process.The exterior of the pipe was very dirty – grime and grit ground in from years of use and sitting. The rim top was covered with a coat of thick lava that overflowed the bowl. There was also some darkening and lava on the rim top. The bowl itself had a thick cake with flecks of tobacco stuck in the cake on the sides. The vulcanite saddle stem surface was dirty and had some tooth marks and chatter on both sides. Jeff took photos of the sides of the bowl and shank to give a better feel for the condition of the bowl. You can see the interesting grain on the bowl side and front.The next photos show the stamping on the underside of the shank, the gold band and the twin brass dots on the left side of the stem. It is clear and is very readable as noted above. This pipe is a bit of a mystery in terms of the name of the maker. Han’s is not clear in terms of who it refers to. There is no identify COM stamp to point to a country of origin. It is a nice-looking Hand Made pipe that I know nothing about. If any of you who are reading this can help unravel the mystery please contact me. Thanks.

Jeff reamed it with a PipNet pipe reamer and cleaned up the remaining cake in the bowl with a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife. He scrubbed out the internals with alcohol, pipe cleaners and cotton swabs until the pipe was clean. He scrubbed the exterior of the bowl with Murphy’s Oil Soap and a tooth brush to remove the grime and grit on the briar and the lava on the rim top. The finish looks very good with good looking grain around the bowl and shank. The rim top looked very good.  He scrubbed the stem with Soft Scrub and soaked it in Briarville’s Pipe Stem Deoxidizer to remove the grime on the acrylic. When the pipe arrived here in Vancouver for the second stop of its restoration tour it looked a lot better. I took photos before I started my part of the work. I took a photo of the bowl and rim top to show how well it had cleaned up. The top and the edges of the bowl are in very good condition. There does not seem to be any damage on either the inner or outer edges and the rim top. The stem had some tooth marks and chatter on both sides ahead of the button.I took photos of the stamping on the left side and underside of the shank. It is clear and readable.I removed the stem from the shank and took a photo. I wanted to give a sense of the proportion of the pipe and I think the photos gives a sense of that. I wiped off the spotty shiny varnish coat on the briar with cotton pads and acetone. It took a bit of scrubbing but I was able to remove all of the shiny coat on the bowl and the grain really shone through once it was gone. I started my work on the pipe by polishing the bowl and rim top with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding with 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped the bowl with a damp cotton pad after each sanding pad. The surface began to take on a nice shine. I worked Before & After Restoration Balm deep into the smooth finish to clean, enliven and protect the briar. I hand rubbed it with my fingers and worked it into the finish. I set it aside to dry for 10-15 minutes. I wiped it off with a soft cloth. I buffed the bowl with a cotton cloth to polish it. It really began to have a deep shine in the briar. I took some photos of the bowl at this point to mark the progress in the restoration. The grain on the bowl stands out with interesting lines moving across the sides of the bowl. I set the bowl aside and turned my attention to the stem. I “painted” the surface of the stem with the flame of a Bic lighter. I was able to lift the majority of the tooth marks. I filled in what remained with black CA glue. Once the repairs cured I sanded them smooth with 220 grit sandpaper to blend them into the surface of the stem. I sanded the repairs and the rest of the stem with the 2 inch square 320-3500 grit sanding pads. I wiped down the stem after each sanding pad. I was able to remove the tooth marks and chatter on both sides with the pads. The stem looked very good.I polished the vulcanite stem with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding it with 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped the stem down after each sanding pad with Obsidian Oil and set it aside to dry. I polished it further with Before & After Pipe Polish – using both the Fine and Extra Fine Polishes. I gave it a rubdown with Obsidian Oil one last time and set it aside. I put the Han’s Original Hand Made Saucer back together and worked the pipe over on the buffing wheel using Blue Diamond to lightly polish the bowl and the acrylic stem. I buffed the bowl and stem to raise the gloss on the briar and the acrylic. I gave the pipe multiple coats of carnauba wax. I buffed the entire pipe with a clean buffing pad to raise the shine. I hand buffed it with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The finished the Han’s Original Hand Made Saucer is shown in the photos below. The medium brown stains on the smooth Saucer shaped bowl works well with the rich bronze Italian acrylic stem. The dimensions of the pipe are: Length: 5 ½ inches, Height: 1 ½ inches, Outside Diameter: 1 ¼ inches, Diameter of the chamber: ¾ of an inch. The weight of the pipe is 52 grams/1.83 ounces. This is an interesting piece of briar, cross grain and birdseye on the bowl and shank. I really like how the briar and the vulcanite work well together. This one will soon be on the rebornpipes store in the Pipes from Various Makers Section. If you are interested in adding this Han’s to your collection this may well be the one for you. Repairing and Restemming a Big Ben Lectura 420 pipe

Last week I received and email from Dayton regarding a pipe he was seeking to have repaired. He was referred to me by our local pipe and cigar shop called City Cigar. He wrote the following email regarding the pipe.

Hey Steve my name is Dayton. I got your information from City Cigar, they said you’d be able to help with a pipe stem repair? If so I’d really appreciate it. Does email work or would you prefer text!

Thanks again – Dayton Lewis.

He wrote that it needed to have a stem repair done on the pipe. Before I take on work I always ask for photos or at least a photo to show me what needed to be done or at least the damage to the pipe. I wrote back and asked for a photo of the pipe that showed what needed to be repaired. He sent the photo below. You can see the nicely grained bowl on the pipe and the stem with the snapped tenon. The tenon included a metal stinger apparatus. It appeared to me that the break had occurred at the internal end of the inserted portion of the stinger. We talked about a price and he dropped the pipe off for repair yesterday evening.I brought the pipe and stem along with the broken parts in the bag he dropped off to the work table last evening. I examined the pipe carefully to see what I was dealing with in terms of a repair. I like to know the details about the pipes I work on. The pipe is stamped on the left side of the shank and reads Big Ben [over] Lectura. On the right side of the shank it was stamped with the shape number 420 [over] Made in Holland. The finish on the bowl was in good condition. The bowl had a thin cake inside and a light overflow of lava on the rim top. Overall the pipe was quite clean. With a repair on the stem the pipe would be in good condition to keep providing a great smoke to Dayton. I took photos of the pipe when I received it. In the photos above don’t miss condition of the bowl and the shank. The pipe looks quite clean and should polish up well. I examined the bowl and shank for damage that might have occurred when the tenon snapped. I have learned over the years to examine it carefully with a bright light and a lens. In this case I found there was a hairline crack on the lower right side of the shank just below the stamping Made in Holland. It extends from the shank end about a half inch up the shank dipping to mid-underside. I have inserted a red arrow in the second and third  photos below to show that location of the crack. I wrote to Dayton and told him about my recommendations for a thin band to repair the cracked shank. I am waiting to hear from him. I repaired the crack with a spot of clear CA glue and then pressed the thin brass band on to the shank end and it drew the parts of the crack together. Now on to the stem repairs my first thoughts were that I would insert a replacement tenon in the drilled-out air way in the stem. I examined the stem diameter and found that it was too thin to drill out. The tenon was quite large in diameter and it would not leave much on the stem if I were to drill it out. I decided to rather find a replacement stem for the pipe. I went through my stems and found one that was the same length, similar diameter and had a solid vulcanite tenon that would need slight adjustment to fit in the shank.I worked on the diameter of the tenon on the new stem with a file/rasp and removed enough to get a close fit. I used 220 grit sandpaper to smooth it out and bring it to round and get the fit what I needed. I also used the file and the sandpaper to reduce the diameter of the stem itself to get a clean fit against the shank end.I fit the stem on the shank and took photos of the fit. The stem looks perfect against the shank end. It is a snug fit and looks very good with the thin brass band.I sanded the stem with the 2 inch square 320-3500 grit sanding pads. I wiped down the stem after each sanding pad. I was able to remove the tooth marks and chatter on both sides with the pads. The stem looked very good. I wiped the stem down with some Obsidian Oil on a cloth to remove the debris from sanding. It was looking much better.I polished the vulcanite stem with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding it with 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped the stem down after each sanding pad with Obsidian Oil and set it aside to dry.  I polished it further with Before & After Pipe Polish – using both the Fine and Extra Fine Polishes. I gave it a rubdown with Obsidian Oil one last time and set it aside. I put the Big Ben Lectura 420 back together and worked the pipe over on the buffing wheel using Blue Diamond to lightly polish the stem. I buffed the bowl and stem to raise the gloss on the briar and the vulcanite. I gave the pipe multiple coats of carnauba wax. I buffed the entire pipe with a clean buffing pad to raise the shine. I hand buffed it with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The finished Ben Ben Lectura is shown in the photos below. The medium brown stains on the smooth Billiard shaped bowl works well with the rich black of the vulcanite stem. The dimensions of the pipe are: Length: 7 ½ inches, Height: 1 ¼ inches, Outside Diameter: 1 inch, Diameter of the chamber: 3/4 inches. The weight of the pipe is .71 ounces/21 grams. This is an interesting piece of briar, cross grain and mixed grain on the bowl and shank. The patterns on the sides are a real mix. I really like how the briar, the thin brass band and the vulcanite work well together. This one will soon be going back to Dayton once I contact him. Restoring a Handsome Tanganyika Meerschaum

My cousin sent me a very good-looking pipe that he found in his meanderings and send it to me for some repairs. Naturally, I was happy to help, but this one provided some tough work. I like the tough ones though – makes me feel like an old timer has truly been saved. This is a Tanganyika Genuine Block Meerschaum 290 Bent Dublin. As soon as I saw it, I liked it. It looked like a really good smoker. The stummel was very handsomely cut – thick and robust. The stem had a metal tenon that screwed into the mortise. There were a few markings on the pipe. On the underside of the shank was engraved Genuine Block [over] Meerschaum. To the left of this (and perpendicular), was the number 290, the shape number. On the left side of the stem was the logo: a charming little elephant. Underneath the stem was the word Tanganyika – this stamping was very faint and I was worried about it. Finally, I wonder if there was something else. On the very end of the shank, was engraved what looked like a capital T. If that’s what it is, then presumably it stands for Tanganyika. If anyone has further information, please post it in the comments below. I looked in the book, Pipes: Artisans and Trademarks by José Manuel Lopes, to learn more about Tanganyika pipes. It had the following entry for the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation:

Company formed in 1955 by Kenyan businessmen from Nairobi after the discovery of a meerschaum mine relatively close to the surface on Kilimanjaro. The meerschaum is tougher, less porous, and cheaper than the Turkish variety. Another mine was soon discovered in Sinya, in the famous Amboseli Game Park. The company, previously based in Arusha (Tanzania), became an associate of a Belgium firm, but closed some years after. It produced the Caveman, Countryman, Kiko, Killimanjaro, Sportsman, Townsman, and Wiga brands. It maintained a link with GBD for the making of the GBD Block Meerschaum series, and after its closure, the English firms, London Meerschaum and Manx Pipes (Manx Meerschaum) continued producing with African meerschaum.Pipedia also included the above information, but also referred me to the page on Amboseli Pipes.

Amboseli Pipes made calabash and meerschaum pipes in Tanganyika. They moved to Arusha, Tanzania, and later closed. Countryman is one of the brands Amboseli produced. Its symbol is an elephant. Other brands include Hillbilly, Kiko, Kilimanjaro, London Meerschaum, Merlin, Sportsman, Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation, and Tembo.Pipedia also seemed to direct all related pages to Kiko Pipes. This page did have the most information, but I wasn’t much closer to figuring out which brand of pipe this was. By comparing the descriptions from the Amboseli brochure below and various animal logos, I was able to eliminate some of the brands. I also looked at some previous articles here on rebornpipes. Therefore, this pipe is probably either a Caveman, Sportsman, or Townsman – without having that specific nomenclature on the pipe itself. But, truth be told, that is no more than an educated guess.Moving on. The stummel was in nice shape. The outside definitely had seem some wear and tear, but there were no major issues. Sure, it was dirty inside, but nothing more than what would be expected. I was pleased to see that the threaded mortise was in excellent condition. I had been concerned that the threads might have been damaged over the years, but no such damage was there. Meanwhile, the big problems lay with the stem. It was heavily oxidized, and thoroughly chewed. In fact, as the photos attest, the button was completely broken. A major rebuild would be required. Even though I would need to rebuild the stem, I wanted to save as much of the original as possible. So, I “painted” the stem with my BIC lighter in order to try and lift some of the bite marks all over the end of it. This worked reasonably well, but there was still a lot of damage.Next, I took some pipe cleaners and lemon-infused 99% isopropyl alcohol, and cleaned the revolting insides of the stem. The photo only shows a few of the pipe cleaners needed. It was pretty darn dirty. I also wiped down the outside with some Murphy’s on some cotton rounds. This removed some of the surface filth. As usual, I sent the stem for a swim in the deoxidizing fluid over night. I could tell even before this that the oxidation was deeply set into the vulcanite, but I needed to clean what I could. The following day, I wiped down the stem with SoftScrub cleanser and made sure to scrub hard. A lot of oxidation came off, but a lot of oxidation remained. I actually sent it for a second bath, and that helped, but not enough. Once it was a clean as I could get it, it was time to build up the damage. I brought out my black cyanoacrylate adhesive and I applied it to the bitemarks and such. The missing chunks would need far more work. I created a new button out of black cyanoacrylate, impregnated with carbon and rubber. I first plugged up the stem’s draught hole with a folded pipe cleaner, coated in petroleum jelly. This ensured that any of the glue would not accidentally plug up the air passage in the stem. This is always a tricky business and it took some patience to make it work. After I applied the cyanoacrylate, it looked pretty darn ugly, but I was expecting that. After the curing, I ended up sanding down the end of the stem to reduce some of the excess material. To carry this process on, I used some miniature files to further shape the button and make it suitable for sanding. I used another file on the inside to ensure there were no rough edges in the bore. I then sanded the stem down with sandpaper to keep the shape. I then used all nine Micromesh pads (1,500 through 12,000 grit) to smooth everything out. I also used Obsidian Pipe Stem Oil in between each pad scrubbing. It is worth noting that a repair this big on a stem will never be completely invisible – especially on this pipe. Finally, I used some 0000-grit steel wool on the aluminum tenon to make it shiny.

On to the stummel. Normally, at this point, I would use a reamer to remove the built-up cake inside the bowl, but meerschaum has the potential to crack in those circumstances. Instead, I simply used some sandpaper taped to a wooden dowel to scrape the bowl down. Fortunately, everything looked sound on the inside of the bowl. I then proceeded to clean out the shank with Q-tips, pipe cleaners, and isopropyl alcohol. There was a lot of nastiness inside this stummel and – boy-oh-boy – it took a lot of cotton to get this thing clean! I then moved on to cleaning the outside of the stummel with Murphy’s Oil Soap and some cotton pads. I also cleaned the insides with some Castile soap and tube brushes. Now in this case, I did it especially carefully because too much soaking can cause meerschaum to soften. In this case, I moved quickly, nothing softened, and everything turned out well. After this, I used my Micromesh pads to sand down and minimize the scratches in the meerschaum and make everything smooth. I then applied some Clapham’s Beeswax Finish to the meerschaum and let it sit for about 30 minutes. I then buffed it with a microfibre cloth. I repeated this process and left it – it sure was pretty! I took the stem (but not the stummel) to my buffing wheel and finished it with some White Diamond polish. Worked like a charm. This Tanganyika Genuine Block Meerschaum 290 Bent Dublin looks beautiful once again. I’m sure my cousin will love it. I hope you enjoyed reading the story of this pipe as much I as I did restoring it. The approximate dimensions of the pipe are as follows: length 5⅛ in. (131 mm); height 2¼ in. (58 mm); bowl diameter 1½ in. (39 mm); chamber diameter ⅞ in. (22 mm). The weight of the pipe is 1⅝ oz. (49 g). A Savinelli Like No Other

Say hello to this beautiful Savinelli Nonpareil 9614 bent billiard! It came to me in a lot of pipes I bought some time ago and it seemed right to bring this one back to life. At first, it seemed like a relatively straightforward restoration, but – wow – this pipe ended up taking an awful lot of work. You can now buy this pipe for your collection and enjoy the fruits of my labours. This pipe promises to be a great smoker, I figure. Let’s look at the markings. The left side of the shank reads Savinelli [over] Nonpareil. Despite Savinelli being an Italian company, the word nonpareil is French and means “without equal” – literally, “not the same”. On the left side of the shank is the lovely Savinelli crown, next to which are the marks 9614 [over] Italy. Naturally, the number refers to the shape. Finally, there are two brass dots on the left side of the stem – very nice touch. Savinelli is one of the most recognized names in pipe smoking and they have a long and storied history. You can read about them from their own website or from Pipedia’s article about them. However, I was particularly interested in learning more about the Nonpareil line. Sadly, Pipedia had nothing on this subject. I checked with Pipephil and they did have a bit of information, which I display below. I learned from Pipephil that old Savinellis used to have four-digit shape numbers, newer ones three. The exceptions to this rule, however, are the Nonpareil and Dry System lines.The stem on this pipe definitely shows signs of use. There were some tooth marks – dents and scratches – and plenty of calcification. Of course, there was also some oxidation, but I didn’t realize just how much until much later. The stummel was tired and drab. There were indications of lava on the rim and plenty of cake in the bowl. Also, the briar had a few little scratches from the years of love of its previous owner. Nothing to worry about – or so I thought. More on that later. Well, the usual cleaning procedures were in order for this pipe. I started on the stem by wiping it down with some Murphy’s on a cotton round. Then, I cleaned out the insides of the stem with pipe cleaners and lemon-oil isopropyl alcohol. At this point, I took a BIC lighter and ‘painted’ the stem with its flame in order to lift the tooth marks. This was moderately successful in raising the dents. Once that was done, the stem went for an overnight soak in the Before & After Hard Rubber Deoxidizer. After soaking, I cleaned off the de-oxidizing fluid with alcohol, pipe cleaners, et cetera. The oxidation had migrated to the surface and I used SoftScrub to work it off. I was surprised at how poorly this worked (as compared with other restorations), so I actually sent it for another soak in the deox fluid and repeated the same cleaning procedures afterwards. Once I got the stem looking vaguely deoxidized (and before I moved on to the Micromesh pads), I built up the tooth damage on the stem with black cyanoacrylate adhesive and let it fully cure. I used my miniature files to take down the majority of the dried glue. I then sanded it down with 400-grit sandpaper to meld seamlessly into the stem. I then used all nine Micromesh pads (1,500 through 12,000 grit) to bring out the lovely black lustre on the stem. But WAIT! I never made it through all nine pads because I could see that the oxidation was so stubborn, I would need to put in some extra work first. Recently, Steve kindly introduced me to a new type of sanding pad – more aggressive grit for more aggressive jobs. I’m going to refer to them as the ‘grey pads’ since that’s their colour. I used the grey pads to really attack the oxidation on the stem and they worked very well. I don’t have photos of this, but I’m pleased with the results. There are some small wounds remaining on the stem, but they are not an issue at all. Once done with the greys, I went back again to the Micromesh pads. I also used Obsidian Pipe Stem Oil in between each pad scrubbing. This also really made the brass dots pop! Putting the stem aside, I moved on to the stummel. I used the PipNet Reamer (and some sandpaper taped to a wooden dowel) to take the bowl down to bare briar, as I wanted to ensure there were no hidden flaws in the walls of the bowl. Fortunately, there were none. I then proceeded to clean out the insides of the shank with Q-tips, pipe cleaners, and isopropyl alcohol. There was a lot of nastiness inside this stummel and – boy-oh-boy – it took a lot of cotton to get this thing clean! I took a close look at the rim. In order to save as much of the rim as possible, I used a piece of machine metal to very delicately scrape away as much lava as I could. I do this before automatically jumping to my topping board. This worked well and the topping board was not needed.A de-ghosting session seemed like a good idea. This de-ghosting consisted of thrusting cotton balls in the bowl and the shank, and saturating them with 99% isopropyl alcohol. I let the stummel sit overnight. This caused the oils, tars and smells to leech out into the cotton. Finally, a relatively clean and fresh-smelling bowl emerged. I then moved on to cleaning the outside of the stummel with Murphy’s Oil Soap and some cotton pads. What a difference that made! I also cleaned the insides with some Castile soap and tube brushes.I examined the scratches and bumps in the briar. I dug out my iron and a damp cloth to try to raise them. The hot and moist steam can often cause the wood to swell slightly and return to shape. This worked quite well, but alas, I forgot to take pictures. After this, I used all nine Micromesh pads (1,500 through 12,000 grit) to remove the scratches in the wood and make everything smooth. Prior to that, however, I applied some clear hockey tape to the shank extension – it was already lovely and smooth, and I didn’t want to scratch it. This tape is fantastic because it is incredibly resistant to sanding yet comes off with no residue whatsoever. I applied some Before & After Restoration Balm and began to admire my work when my eyes saw something that was uncovered in my restoration: a thin craze line in the valley between the stummel and the shank. It was certainly not visible before, so the cleaning and sanding had revealed it. Even though the line was incredibly thin and seemingly shallow, I needed to address it. My first step was to ensure that the line would not continue to creep after I had repaired it. To that end, I took a micro-drill bit, inserted it in my Dremel, and very carefully drilled a hole in both ends of the line. That done, I carefully applied a tiny bead of cyanoacrylate adhesive to the tiny hole and the tiny line. Finally, I let it cure. This was a great success – I was really pleased with how the repair looked. I had to sand this area again, of course, so I applied my hockey tape all over the place (see photo) and went to work with some sandpaper and Micromesh pads. I then rubbed in some more Before & After Restoration Balm and finally saw the beauty of my work.Off to the bench polisher I went. I applied some White Diamond and a few coats of carnauba wax and they added the finishing touch. This Savinelli Nonpareil 9614 bent billiard was in need of a reminder of its beauty and Italian heritage. I am pleased to announce that this pipe is for sale! Restoring a Stanwell Pipe of the Year 1987 Dublin

The next pipe I am working on was purchased on 12/13/2022 as part of a group of pipes from a fellow in Copenhagen, Denmark. This was a dirty pipe with a lot of wear and tear and obviously it had been someone’s favourite smoker. The pipe has an identifying plate on the topside of the shank that reads Stanwell [over] 1987. There was no other stamping on the shank and the silver plate confirmed for me that it was a Stanwell Pipe of the Year. The dirty sandblast finish was not able to hide the beauty in the grime. There were tars and oils ground into the surface of the briar. The bowl had a moderate cake that flowed over the top of the smooth rim in a spotty coat of a lava and it was hard to assess the condition of the inner edge. The stem was a black vulcanite taper stem with a silver Crown S on the topside. It had some tooth marks and chatter on both sides ahead of the button. I had a lot of oxidation and calcification on both sides of the stem. It had a lot of potential. Jeff took photos of the pipes before he started his clean up work. Jeff took photos of the rim and bowl to show the moderate cake and spotty lava coat covering the rim top. There appeared to be a fill in a flaw on the rim top and inner edge at the left rear of the bowl. It really was a dirty pipe but still a beauty. He also took photos of the stem surfaces to show its overall condition when it arrived. The photos of the sides and heel of the bowls show beautiful grain around the bowl and shank sides. The sandblast is nicely done and highlights the grain. The brown stain on the briar adds depth finish on the pipe and makes the grain really stand out on the smooth parts. It shows some promise. He also took a photo of the stamped silver plate on the topside of the shank. It reads as noted above. The silver crown “S” inlay on the top of the stem is tarnished but a beauty.I turned to the internet to find out information about the Stanwell Pipe of the Year. I have included the shape chart and part of the article below for the information that it contains.…Recently, Blue Room Briars acquired a complete Stanwell Pipe of the Year (POY) collection spanning from 1980 – 2017. Looking at these pipes in detail reveals some interesting insights into Stanwell’s production, although it should be noted that these findings are not the final say on when a particular pipe was made, but we hope you can use it as a guide when trying to determine the era of manufacture for Stanwell pipes made after 1980. 

The first pipe of note is the 1980 POY. This pipe does not come with the engraved silver plaquette. The pipe also sports a traditional vulcanite mouthpiece.

Between 1981 and 1998, the Stanwell pipes from the POY collection have the addition of silver plaquettes denoting the year, a traditional vulcanite mouthpiece, and also have a Teflon lined mortise. This is an interesting feature that creates a very stable connection between the mortise and tenon, as well as allowing the mortise to be swabbed out easily for maintenance. It wouldn’t be unwarranted to believe that other Stanwell pipes with a Teflon sleeved mortise were probably made between the 1980s to late 1990s. This additional, and costly, feature demonstrates Stanwell’s commitment to quality manufacturing even into the last portion of the 20th century.

Jeff cleaned up the pipe for me. He reamed the bowl with a PipNet pipe reamer and cleaned it up with a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife. He scrubbed the exterior with Murphy’s Oil Soap and a tooth brush to clean off the grime off the finish and the overflow of lava on the rim top. The cleaning had removed the grime on the rim top. He cleaned up the internals of the shank, mortise and stem with pipe cleaners, cotton swabs and alcohol to remove all of the oils and tars in the pipe. He soaked the stem in Briarvilles Pipe Stem Deoxidizer and was able to remove much of the oxidation, calcification. When it arrived here in Vancouver it was a clean pipe and I knew what I had to work with. I took photos of it before I started my part of the restoration. I took a photo of the rim top and the stem to show their condition once it arrived in Canada. Jeff was able to clean up the cake and the lava overflow that was shown in the rim and bowl photos above. The rim top looked very good but there seemed to be light damage and darkening to the top and inner edge of the bowl. The stem looked better, though there were light tooth marks and chatter on both sides near the button. I took a photo of the stamping on the silver plate on the topside of the shank to show that it was readable and undamaged by the cleanup work. I removed the stem from the shank and took a photo of the parts to give a sense of what the pipe looks like.I started my work on the inner edge and rim top with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper. I also used a wooden ball and a piece of 220 grit sandpaper to clean up the inner bevel of the rim. It took some work but I was able to remove the damage and the darkening. It looked much better. I started polishing the smooth rim top with micromesh sanding pads. I dry sanded it with 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped the bowl down after each pad with a damp cloth. The smooth rim top began to take on a rich shine and grain was beginning to stand out. You can also see the fill on the left rear of the rim top. I sanded with all of the pads and wiped the bowl down after each pad with a soft cloth. I rubbed the bowl and shank down with Before & After Restoration Balm to deep clean the finish on the bowl and shank. The product works to clean, enliven and protect the briar. I worked it in with my fingers to get it into the briar. I used a horsehair shoe brush to work it into the sand blast. I let it sit for 10 minutes then I wiped it off and buffed it with a soft cloth. The briar really began to have a rich shine. I took some photos of the bowl at this point to mark the progress in the restoration. It is a beautiful bowl. I polished the silver plaque on the topside of the shank with a jewellers cloth to remove the slight remaining oxidation and to protect and preserve it. I set the bowl aside and worked on the stem at this point in the process. I “painted” the stem surface with the flame of a Bic Lighter to lift the tooth marks on both sides. I was able to lift the majority of them. I filled in one mark on each side of the stem ahead of the button. I used a small file to flatten out the repairs. I sanded the stem surface with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper. I polished the vulcanite stem surface and repairs near the button with a new product I am using. I ordered a set of 2 inch sanding pads for 320-3500 grit sanding pads from Amazon. They work amazingly well and are easy to manage and sand close to the sharp edge of the button. I polished light tooth marks and chatter out of the stem with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding with 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped the stem down after each sanding pad with Obsidian Oil. I polished the stem with Before & After Pipe Stem Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine. I gave it a coat of Obsidian Pipe Stem Oil. It works to protect the stem from oxidizing. I set it aside to dry.I put the stem back on the Stanwell Pipe of the Year 1987 Dublin pipe and took it to the buffer. I buffed the bowl and stem with Blue Diamond to polish the briar and the vulcanite. Blue Diamond does a great job on the smaller scratches that remain in both. I gave the bowl multiple coats of Conservator’s Wax and the stem several coats of carnauba wax and buffed the pipe with a clean buffing pad to raise the shine. I hand buffed it with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. I am amazed at how well it turned out. The finished pipe is shown in the photos below. This is a beautiful Stanwell POY 1987 – the vulcanite taper stem and smooth rim top and sandblast finish combine to give the pipe a great look. The polished black, vulcanite stem looks really good with the rich browns standing out in the sandblast. The dimensions of the pipe are Length: 5 ½ inches, Height: 1 ½ inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 ½ inch, Chamber diameter: ¾ of an inch. The weight of the pipe is 1.20 ounces/34 grams. This is another pipe that I will be putting on the rebornpipes online store in the Danish Pipe Pipemaking Companies Section shortly, if you are interested in adding it to your collection. New Life for a Stanwell Pipe of the Year 1988 Apple

The next pipe I am working on was purchased on 12/13/2022 as part of a group of pipes from a fellow in Copenhagen, Denmark. This was a dirty pipe with a lot of wear and tear and obviously it had been someone’s favourite smoker. The pipe has an identifying plate on the topside of the shank that reads Stanwell [over] 1988. There was no other stamping on the shank and the silver plate confirmed for me that it was a Stanwell Pipe of the Year. The dirty sandblast finish was not able to hide the beauty in the grime. There were tars and oils ground into the surface of the briar. The bowl had a thick cake that flowed over the top of the smooth rim in a thick coat of a lava and it was hard to assess the condition of the inner edge. Cleaning up a Television Imported Briar Italian Made Churchwarden

The next pipe on the table was purchased from a fellow in St. Leonard, Maryland, USA on 03/24/2018. It is a nice looking Smooth Rhodesian Churchwarden with twin rings around the cap on the bowl and a long straight stem. It is stamped on the left side of the shank and reads TELEVISION. On the right side it is stamped Imported Briar [over] Italy. The stamping is very clear and readable. The finish had a spotty coat of varnish around the rim, sides and shank and several small fills on the left side of the shank and underside. The bowl had a thin cake and dust and debris. The rim top had spots of lava on it and was dirty. The rest of the bowl and shank. The stem was acrylic and in decent condition with some ripples in the underside from when it had been heated to bend it. It had some tooth chatter and marks on both sides near the button was also dirty and covered with bubbly varnish and debris. Jeff took photos of the pipe when he unpacked it and before he started his clean up work. It is a great looking piece of briar.Jeff took photos of the bowl and rim top to show the cake in the light cake bowl and the debris in the finish. He also took photos of the stem to show the nicks and dents stem surface s well as the light tooth marks and chatter on the vulcanite stem. He took photos of the bowl and heel to show the condition of the finish. Though the photos show the spotty varnish coat the grain underneath actually looks very good underneath. Jeff took photos of the stamping on the sides of the shank. It read as noted above and was readable. You can also see the spots and crackle in the varnish coat on the shank. There is also a gold disc on the left side of the taper shank with an R stamped in the disc. I have worked on quite a few Television Pipes over the years – old timers, billiards and several Churchwarden pipes. I checked all the usual sites for information and I could find nothing about the brand. I decided to leave the hunt behind and just work on the pipe.

I took some photos of the pipe as I took it out of the box. Here is what I saw. I slid it out of the wrapper around it. I could see that Jeff had cleaned it well. The bowl had been reamed with a PipNet reamer and Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife. He had scrubbed the exterior with undiluted Murphy’s Oil Soap. He rinsed it with warm water. He cleaned out the internals with alcohol, cotton swabs and pipe cleaners. He cleaned out the airway in the stem with pipe cleaners and alcohol. The grain on the bowl is quite nice with just a few small fills that are solid and well blended in with the surrounding briar. I took photos of the pipe before I started my work on it. The rim top had cleaned up very well and the rim top and edges looked very good. There were still shiny spots on the rim and in the rings. The stem was in decent condition other than light tooth chatter on both sides at the button. The stem also has some nicks on the sides midstem. The stem was vulcanite and has some light oxidation remaining. I took a photo of the stamping on the smooth panel on the left side of the shank. It is clear and readable as noted above. I removed the stem and took a photo of the pipe to show the proportion of the stem to the bowl. It is a nice looking pipe.I took some photos of the fills in the underside and up the side of the shank next to the bowl junction. They both were damaged and shrunken.I repaired the two fills with clear CA glue and some briar dust. Once the repairs hardened I sanded them with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth them out and start blending them into the surface.I wiped down the bowl with acetone to remove the s potty varnish on the briar. I avoided wiping down the two repaired areas so the acetone would not dissolve the repairs. I sanded the bowl with a Medium and a Fine sanding sponge to remove the varnish coat that remained. I also worked over the repaired areas and they began to look very good against the rest of the briar. I polished the bowl with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding with 1500-12000 grit sanding pads. I wiped the bowl down with a damp cloth after each sanding pad. It began to look much better. I worked some Before & After Restoration Balm into the surface of the briar and into the twin rings around the bowl cap. I rubbed it on with my fingertips and let it sit doing it is job for 10 minutes. The product works to clean, rejuvenate and preserve the briar. I buffed it off with a soft cloth after the ten minutes. It looked much better at this point. I set the bowl aside and turned my attention to the stem. I removed the stinger and then filled in the deep gouge marks on the stem surface with black CA glue. Once the repairs cured I sanded the stem with the new 320-3500 grit sanding pads to blend the repairs into the stem surface and also to remove the slight oxidation. I polished the stem with micromesh sanding pads – 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped it down with Obsidian Oil after each sanding pad. I used Before & After Pipe Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine to further polish the stem. I gave it a final coat of Obsidian Oil and set it aside to dry. Once I finished working on the stem and put it back together you can see that this Television Imported Briar Italy Churchwarden is another beautiful pipe. The rusticated briar around the bowl is clean and really tactile. The rim top and edges are in great condition. The rich brown stains gave the grain a sense of depth with the polishing and waxing. The depth of the rustication really stood out. I put the acrylic stem back on the bowl and carefully buffed the pipe with a clean buffing pad to raise the shine. I hand buffed the pipe with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The finished Television Italian Churchwarden is a beauty and feels great in the hand and looks very good. Give the finished pipe a look in the photos below. The dimensions of the pipe are Length: 11 inches, Height: 1 ½ inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 ¼ inches, Chamber diameter: ¾ of an inch. The weight of pipe is 1.66 ounces /47 grams. It is another one that is much more beautiful in person than these photos can capture. I will be putting it on the rebornpipes store soon. They are 2×2 sanding pads with 320 -3500 grit regular sandpaper. I started with the 320 grade and worked my way through all of them and I like what see with them. I polished light tooth marks and chatter out of the stem with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding with 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped the stem down after each sanding pad with Obsidian Oil. I further polished it with Before & After Pipe Stem Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine. I gave it another coat of Obsidian Oil and set it aside to dry. I put the stem back on the Stanwell Pipe of the Year 1992 Cutty pipe and took the pipe to the buffer. I buffed the bowl and stem with Blue Diamond to polish the briar and the vulcanite. Blue Diamond does a great job on the smaller scratches that remain in both. I gave the bowl and the stem several coats of carnauba wax and buffed the pipe with a clean buffing pad to raise the shine. I hand buffed it with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. I am amazed at how well it turned out. The finished pipe is shown in the photos below. This is a beautiful Stanwell POY 1992 Cutty– the vulcanite taper stem and smooth rim top and sandblast finish combine to give the pipe a great look. The polished black, vulcanite stem looks really good with the rich browns standing out in the sandblast. The dimensions of the pipe are Length: 6 inches, Height: 2 inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 1/8 inches, Chamber diameter: ¾ of an inch. The weight of the pipe is 1.27 ounces/36 grams. This is another pipe that I will be putting on the rebornpipes online store in the Danish Pipe Pipemaking Companies Section shortly, if you are interested in adding it to your collection. A Fun Restoration of a Stanwell POY 1986 Dublin

The next pipe I am working on was purchased on 12/13/2022 as part of a group of pipes from a fellow in Copenhagen, Denmark. This was a dirty pipe with a lot of wear and tear and obviously it had been someone’s favourite smoker. The pipe has an identifying plate on the left side of the shank that reads Stanwell [over] 1986. There was no other stamping on the shank and the silver plate confirmed for me that it was a Stanwell Pipe of the Year. The dirty sandblast finish was not able to hide the beauty in the grime. There were tars and oils ground into the surface of the briar. The bowl had a moderate cake that flowed over the top of the lightly crowned rim in a spotty coat of a lava and it was hard to assess the condition of the inner edge. The stem was a black vulcanite saddle stem with a silver Crown S on the left side of the saddle. It had some tooth marks and chatter on both sides ahead of the button. There was also some oxidation and calcification on both sides of the stem. It had a lot of potential. Jeff took photos of the pipes before he started his clean up work. Jeff took photos of the rim and bowl to show the moderate cake and spotty lava coat covering the rim top. It really was a dirty pipe but still a beauty. He also took photos of the stem surfaces to show its overall condition when it arrived. The photos of the sides and heel of the bowls show beautiful grain around the bowl and shank sides. The sandblast is nicely done and highlights the grain. The brown stain on the briar adds depth finish on the pipe and makes the grain really stand out on the smooth parts. It shows some promise. He also took a photo of the stamped silver plate on the left underside of the shanks. It reads as noted above. I turned to the internet to find out information about the Stanwell Pipe of the Year. I came across this interesting article and shape chart on the Blue Room Briars site where they listed a collection of the POYs (https://www.blueroombriars.com/blogs/news/the-stanwell-pipe-of-the-year-collection). I have included the shape chart and part of the article below for the information that it contains.…Recently, Blue Room Briars acquired a complete Stanwell Pipe of the Year (POY) collection spanning from 1980 – 2017. Looking at these pipes in detail reveals some interesting insights into Stanwell’s production, although it should be noted that these findings are not the final say on when a particular pipe was made, but we hope you can use it as a guide when trying to determine the era of manufacture for Stanwell pipes made after 1980. 

The first pipe of note is the 1980 POY. This pipe does not come with the engraved silver plaquette. The pipe also sports a traditional vulcanite mouthpiece.

Between 1981 and 1998, the Stanwell pipes from the POY collection have the addition of silver plaquettes denoting the year, a traditional vulcanite mouthpiece, and also have a Teflon lined mortise. This is an interesting feature that creates a very stable connection between the mortise and tenon, as well as allowing the mortise to be swabbed out easily for maintenance. It wouldn’t be unwarranted to believe that other Stanwell pipes with a Teflon sleeved mortise were probably made between the 1980s to late 1990s. This additional, and costly, feature demonstrates Stanwell’s commitment to quality manufacturing even into the last portion of the 20th century.

Jeff cleaned up the pipe for me. He reamed the bowl with a PipNet pipe reamer and cleaned it up with a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife. He scrubbed the exterior with Murphy’s Oil Soap and a tooth brush to clean off the grime off the finish and the overflow of lava on the rim top. The cleaning had removed the grime on the rim top. He cleaned up the internals of the shank, mortise and stem with pipe cleaners, cotton swabs and alcohol to remove all of the oils and tars in the pipe. He soaked the stem in Briarvilles Pipe Stem Deoxidizer and was able to remove much of the oxidation, calcification. When it arrived here in Vancouver it was a clean pipe and I knew what I had to work with. I took photos of it before I started my part of the restoration. I took a photo of the rim top and the stem to show their condition once it arrived in Canada. Jeff was able to clean up the cake and the lava overflow that was shown in the rim and bowl photos above. The rim top looked very good but there seemed to be light damage and darkening to the inner edge of the bowl. The stem looked better, though there were light tooth marks and chatter on both sides near the button. The bend in the stem would need to be corrected as well as it had straightened slightly.I took a photo of the stamping on the silver plate on the left side of the shank to show that it was readable and undamaged by the cleanup work. I removed the stem from the shank and took a photo of the parts to give a sense of what the pipe looks like.I started my work on the inner edge and rim top with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper. I was able to remove the damage and the darkening. It looked much better. I started polishing the smooth rim top with micromesh sanding pads. I dry sanded it with 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped the bowl down after each pad with a damp cloth. The crowned rim top began to take on a rich shine and grain was beginning to stand out. I sanded with all of the pads and wiped the bowl down after each pad with a soft cloth. I rubbed the bowl and shank down with Before & After Restoration Balm to deep clean the finish on the bowl and shank. The product works to clean, enliven and protect the briar. I worked it in with my fingers to get it into the briar. I used a horsehair shoe brush to work it into the sand blast. I let it sit for 10 minutes then I wiped it off and buffed it with a soft cloth. The briar really began to have a rich shine. I took some photos of the bowl at this point to mark the progress in the restoration. It is a beautiful bowl. I polished the silver band and plaque on the side of the shank with a jewellers cloth to remove the slight remaining oxidation and to protect and preserve it.I set the bowl aside and worked on the stem at this point in the process. The bend in the stem needed to be adjusted to follow the flow of the bowl and shank curve. I heated the stem until the vulcanite was pliable and bent it to match the curve. It looked much better. I polished it with Before & After Pipe Stem Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine. I gave it a coat of Obsidian Pipe Stem Oil. It works to protect the stem from oxidizing. I set it aside to dry. I put the stem back on the Stanwell Pipe of the Year 1986 Dublin Calabash pipe and took the pipe to the buffer. I buffed the bowl and stem with Blue Diamond to polish the briar and the vulcanite. Blue Diamond does a great job on the smaller scratches that remain in both. I gave the bowl and the stem several coats of carnauba wax and buffed the pipe with a clean buffing pad to raise the shine. I hand buffed it with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. I am amazed at how well it turned out. The finished pipe is shown in the photos below. Restoring a Republic Era Petersons “Kildare” 87S Apple with a Saddle Stem

The next pipe I have chosen is smooth finished Peterson’s “Kildare” Apple shaped pipe that had a very dirty/grimy finish but had some good-looking grain around the bowl sides and shank. Both Jeff and I have no memory of where we picked up this pipe. Was it a trade or a pipe hunt find? Could easily have been either one. This Lightweight Apple was stamped on the left side of the shank and read Peterson’s [over] “Kildare”. It was stamped on the right side and read Made in the Republic of Ireland (three lines) followed by the number 87S (faint but present) near the shank/bowl junction. I believe the “S” is for the saddle stem designation. The pipe was filthy when I brought it to the table. There was grime ground into the briar sides and rim. There was a minimal cake in the bowl but there was still a coat of lava on the rim top but the edges of the bowl. The inner edge of the bowl was thickly coated in lava and it was hard to know how the rim top and edges looked underneath. The stem was dirty with oxidation and calcification on it. There were light tooth marks and chatter on the top and underside on and near the button. There was a light “P” stamp logo on left side of the saddle stem. I took photos of the pipe before my cleanup work. They tell the story and give a glimpse of the promise that we see in this pipe. I took photos of the rim top and stem to show the general condition of the pipe. The bowl has been but the rim top has a lava coat flowing down the outside of the bowl and the inner edge. The finish on the bowl is rough around the outer edge but I will know more once it is cleaned up. The photos of the stem show the oxidation, calcification and light tooth marks and chatter on both sides near the button. The P-Lip button and edges look good.I took photos of the sides of the shank to show the stamping. The stamping is faint but readable in the photos below and is as noted above. There is a “P” logo stamp on the left side of the saddle stem. It is faint but I am hoping that I can bring it back with white acrylic. I also removed the stem from the shank and took a photo of the parts of the pipe to give a clear picture of what I see here. I am including the information from Pipedia’s article on Peterson pipes. It is a great read in terms of the history of the brand (https://pipedia.org/wiki/Peterson). I have included a bit of the pertinent history here.

1950 – 1989 The Republic Era – From 1950 to the present time, the stamp for this era is “Made in the Republic of Ireland” in a block format generally in three lines but two lines have been used with or without Republic being abbreviated.

During the 1950’s and 60’s the Kapp & Peterson Company was still in the ownership of the Kapp family. However, 1964 saw the retiral of the company Managing Director Frederick Henry (Harry) Kapp.

I turned to “The Peterson Pipe” by Mark Irwin and Gary Malmberg to get some background on the Peterson’s System Line. On page 314 it had the following information.

Kildare (1965-) First issue of line with matte-finish in Classic Range shapes, P-Lip and fishtail mouthpiece. Second issue C.1979 as Kildare Patch, with rusticated patches on pipe surface. Third issue 2010, matte-brown, P-Lip or fishtail mouthpiece, no band. Fourth issue 2011-, burgundy sandblast finish, nickel army mount, fishtail mouthpiece, exclusive to smokingpipes.com.

Judging from the description above I believe that I am working on a First Issue of the line in the time period of 1965-1979. It is a late Republic Era Classic Shaped pipe with a matte-finish and a P-Lip stem. Now it was time to work on the pipe.

With that information at hand I turned to work on the pipe itself. Jeff had thoroughly cleaned up the pipe. He reamed the pipe with a PipNet Pipe Reamer and cleaned up the remnants with a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife. I scrubbed the bowl with undiluted Murphy’s Oil Soap and a tooth brush. I rinsed it under running warm water to remove the soap and grime. The bowl was much cleaner though there were many small nicks and divots in the surface of the briar – but it was clean! I used a half wooden ball and a piece of 220 grit sandpaper to bevel and clean up the rim top. I also used a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out the outer edge as well and give a slight curved or crown rim top look. I filled in the many nicks and divots in the bowl surface with clear CA glue. Once it cured I smoothed them out with a medium and a fine sanding sponge. Once finished it looked much better. I cleaned out the inside of the shank and the airway in the stem with alcohol, cotton swabs and pipe cleaners. Many pipe cleaners later the airways were clear and the smell much better.I polished it with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding with 1500-12000 grit sanding pads. I wiped it down with a damp cloth to remove the dust on the surface. I did not need to restain the rim top and edge because with polishing the match is very good. I rubbed the bowl down with Before & After Restoration Balm. I worked it into the surface of the bowl sides and shank with my fingertips. The product works to clean, enliven and protect the briar. I let the balm sit for a little while and then buffed with a cotton cloth to raise the shine. I set the bowl aside and turned my attention to the stem. I scrubbed the exterior of the stem with Soft Scrub to remove as much of the oxidation and calcification as possible. It certainly is improved!In the photos above you can see roughening on the top of the stem surface. I cleaned up the surface and there was some pitting in the surface on both sides. I filled in the pitted surface with clear CA glue. Once it cured I flattened it out with a small file and sanded it smooth with 220 grit sandpaper. I started polishing it with 600 grit wet dry sandpaper. I touched up the “P” stamp on the left side of the saddle with some white acrylic fingernail polish. Once it cured I used a worn 1500 grit micromesh pad to polish off the excess material. The stamp is faint in the vulcanite so it is quite hard to see clearly.I polished the stem with micromesh sanding pads – wet sanding with 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped the stem down after each sanding pad with Obsidian Oil. I polished it with Before & After Pipe Stem Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine. I gave it a coat of Obsidian Pipe Stem Oil. It works to protect the stem from oxidizing. I set it aside to dry. NOTE: When I was buffing the pipe I notice a scratch on the left side the shank above the stamping that looked like a crack in the shank… I was a bit frustrated so I stopped buffing and checked it out and was relieved to see under bright light that it was a scratch and not a crack. I also removed the stem and checked the mortise end and there was no crack! I tried steaming the scratch out and was able to improve it but it is still present. There is also a small on the underside of the stem… irritating but part of the pipe’s story.

I am excited to be on the homestretch. I look forward to the final look when the Republic Era Peterson’s “Kildare” 87S Apple with a saddle stem is put back together, polished and waxed. I put the bowl and stem back together. I lightly polished the bowl and stem with Blue Diamond to polish out the scratches in the briar and the vulcanite. I gave the bowl and the stem multiple coats of carnauba wax. I buffed the pipe with a clean buffing pad to raise the shine. I hand buffed it with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The pipe polished up pretty nicely. The grain really pops with the wax and polish. The shiny black vulcanite stem is a beautiful contrast to the browns of the bowl and thick shank. This Republic Era Peterson’s “Kildare” 87S Apple was another challenging pipe to work on. It is a nice piece of briar that cleaned up really well. The pipe feels great in the hand will be better when warmed up while smoking. The finished pipe is shown in the photos below. The dimensions of the pipe are Length: 5 ½ inches, Height: 1 ¾ inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 inch, Chamber diameter: ¾ of an inch. The weight of the pipe is 1.13 ounces/32 grams. I will be putting it on the rebornpipes store in the Irish Pipemakers Section if you would like to add it to your rack and carry on the previous pipeman’s legacy. This is an interesting estate to bring back to life.
