Restoring an older MLC Redmanol French Briar Crosby Style Pipe with a Redmanol Stem

This older MLC billiard (almost a Bing Crosby shape though certainly a predecessor) is early 20th century pipe. It came to us from Mark in Missoula, Montana, USA and was a pipe from his Grandfather’s collection. He sent us a cigar box of pipes from that collection that included a lot of interesting pipes for us to work through. Mark also included a biographical sketch on his Grandfather, W.B. Bollen (written by Mark’s Father). His Grandfather, WB Bollen was quite involved in the state of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest of the USA in the field of agriculture through Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. The sketch is called Recollections of W.B. Bollen and I am in the midst of reading it while I work on the first of these pipes – the MLC Billiard. According to Pipedia, (https://pipedia.org/wiki/M._Linkman_%26_Co) the initials MLC stand for M. Linkman Company which was thought to mean Mary Linkman Company. They were a Chicago based company that produced both briars and meerschaums. The company was named for the mother of the same Linkman who branded pipes under that same name and then eventually became the Dr. Grabow pipe manufacturer with which we are familiar. Pipephil’s site gave a little more information at this link (http://www.pipephil.eu/logos/en/logo-l4.html). M. Linkman and Co. was established by Louis B. Linkman and August Fisher in 1898. The company closed down in the 1950s and the Dr Grabow branch was sold to Henry Leonard and Thomas Inc.(HLT), There was also a note that early Linkman’s pipes were stamped MLC in an oval.

The second link included this older photo of the Linkmans that is really fascinating. I am including it below.If you have followed this blog for a while you have come to know that I love really old pipes and this one fits into that category of pipes. It is stamped MLC in an oval over Redmanol over French Briar on the left side of the shank. The stamping is faint but readable with a light and lens. There are no other stampings on the briar. The band is Sterling Silver and is dented and worn but also bears the MLC oval logo stamped on the topside. It is a pencil shank billiard with a thin “unbreakable” tube lined Redmanol stem. The bowl exterior was absolutely filthy. There was darkening and oils ground into the briar. The thick cake in the bowl and the lava coat on the edges and rim top made it hard to know what the condition of the rim edges. There also appeared to be a thin hairline crack on the backside of the bowl from the rim edge about 2/3 of the way down to the shank. There was also a large silver “O” on the front of the bowl which I believe refers to Oregon Agricultural College (which later became Oregon State University). As with other schools in the 1920s pipes were made honouring the institution and were available to graduates and students. This fits the time frame for this pipe. W.B. Bollen received his BS in Horticulture in 1921 and an MS in Soil Bacteriology in 1922, both from Oregon Agricultural Colledge. I am fairly certain that this dates the pipe that I am working on. The Redmanol Stem was in good condition with the usual chips, nicks and tooth marks of a pipe that is over 100 years old. Jeff took the photos that follow before started the cleanup. You can see from the photos the condition of the pipe.He took photos of the rim top and bowl to show the condition of the pipe. You can see the thick cake, the lava on the rim top, an out of round inner edge and a potential crack on the rim top at the back of the bowl. He also took photos of the Redmanol stem to show its condition as noted above. He took photos of the sides of the bowl to show the grain underneath the dirt and grime ground into the finish. You can also see the nicks in the briar and the oxidized silver O that is on the front of the bowl. There is a lot of beauty underneath the grime. While he was unable to capture the stamping on the shank side he was able to capture the stamping on the silver band. Underneath the oxidation and scratches, it is still clear and reads MLC in an oval over Sterling.Now that I knew a bit of the history of the pipe both in terms of the maker and the pipeman who enjoyed it, I turned to work on the pipe itself. Jeff had thoroughly cleaned up the pipe. He had reamed the pipe with a PipNet pipe reamer back to bare briar and removed the remnants of the cake with a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife. He scrubbed the bowl with undiluted Murphy’s Oil Soap and a tooth brush. He rinsed it under running warm water to remove the soap and grime. He cleaned out the inside of the shank and the airway in the stem with alcohol, cotton swabs, pipe cleaners and shank brushes. He soaked the stem in Briarville’s Pipe Stem Deoxidizer and rinsed it off with warm water. I took photos of the pipe before I started my part of the restoration work.  I took photos of the bowl and rim top to show the clean condition. The damage on the inner edge of the bowl is evident as is the crack on the rim top above the crack on the back of the bowl. The crack extends across the rim top and just slightly into the bowl. That is to be expected. The bowl walls look very good. The Redmanol Stem looks very clean and the chips and nicks are visible the length of the stem. The silver band looks far better.I tried to capture the stamping on the shank side and band in the photos below. They are faint and very hard to capture. It is there but hard to see with out a lens. I removed the stem from the shank and took a photo of the parts of the pipe. It is a beautiful pencil shank pipe. I also took a photo of the Silver “O” on the bowl front. It is nicely done and the tarnish is gone. I decided to address the out of round inner edge of the bowl first. I used a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out the damage on the edge and to give it a slight bevel to bring it back to round. I sanded out the damage on the rim top to smooth it as well. It definitely looks better.I turned to deal with the crack in the back of the bowl that I mentioned above. The first photo sows the crack. It is hairline and starts on the rim top as shown above and extends down the bowl about 2/3 of the distance to the shank. It is a single crack so I used a small micro Drill bit on my Dremel and put a small hole at the bottom of the crack to stop it from going further. You will notice some small nicks in the surface of the briar where the drill hit as I guided it to the crack end.I wiped the back of the bowl down with alcohol on a cotton pad to clean up any debris from the drilling and any that might be in the fine crack. I ran a thin bead of clear CA glue down the crack and in the drill hole and nicks. I used a dental spatula to press fine briar dust into the crack through the glue. Once it cured I sanded the repaired area with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out the repair. I polished it with a 400 grit sanding pad and then stained the area with a Cherry stain pen to match the rest of the surrounding briar. I polished the briar with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding with 1500-12000 grit sanding pads. I wiped the bowl down with a damp cloth after each pad. I take photos of the three groups of pads for my own viewing primarily as I am looking for progress in polishing. Once again, by the end of the process it looked quite good. I rubbed the bowl and shank down with Before & After Restoration Balm. I worked it into the surface of the bowl sides and shank with my fingertips. It works to clean, enliven and protect the briar. I let the balm sit for 15 minutes and buffed with a cotton cloth to raise the shine. The grain came alive. I set the bowl aside and turned my attention to the stem. The scratches, tooth chatter and marks easily were addressed by dry sanding the stem with 320-3500 grit sanding pads. I wiped it down after each pad with Obsidian Oil. It looked very good at this point in the process.I polished the Redmanol stem with micromesh sanding pads – 1500-12000 grit pads to further remove the remaining scratches. I wiped the stem down with Obsidian Oil after each sanding pad. I used Before & After Pipe Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine to further polish the stem. I rubbed it down with a final coat of Obsidian Oil and let it dry. This 1920s MLC Redmanol French Briar Pencil Shank Billiard with a Redmanol stem is a great looking pipe with some interesting scalloping around the sides of the bowl. An added bonus if you are an Oregon Agricultural College Fan there is a silver “O” on the front of the bowl. The beautiful grain around the bowl is quite stunning and works well with both the shape and the polished silver band and “O” and the Redmanol taper stem. I put the stem back on the bowl and carefully buffed the pipe with Blue Diamond on the buffing wheel using a light touch on the briar. I gave the bowl and the stem multiple coats of carnauba wax on the wheel and followed by buffing the pipe with a clean buffing pad. I hand buffed the pipe with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The finished MLC Redmanol French Briar Billiard fits nicely in the hand and feels great. Give the finished pipe a look in the photos below. The dimensions of the pipe are Length: 6 ¾ inches, Height: 1 ½ inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 ¼ inches, Chamber diameter: 7/8 of an inch. The weight of the pipe is 24 grams/.85 ounces. Is this what you would call an English Walnut Shape on this House of Robertson Pipe?

The next pipe on the work table is a unique House of Robertson pipe we picked up. It was purchased from a seller on eBay from Long Beach, California, USA on 07/13/2024. It is a Billiard or maybe an Egg with a rusticated finish that makes it look like the shell on an English Walnut. The name House of Robertson is roughly hand-etched with an engraving tool on the underside of the shank on a smooth panel. This pipe is shaped somewhere between and Egg and a Billiard but really does capture the shape of a Walnut. As you look at the following photos you will see why I am not sure what to call it. The pipe has a unique rustication on the sides of the bowl and shank. The bowl is thickly caked with some lava overflow on the rim top. The outer and inner edges of the rim look to be in good condition. There is some darkening and nicks on the inner edge but nothing horrible. The pipe was dirty but underneath all of the grime it appears to be in excellent condition. It had an oxidized silver band on the shank that is stamped Sterling but I am certain it is cosmetic as there are no cracks showing on the shank end. It is definitely an interesting pipe and should clean up very well. The fit of the stem to the shank was good. The vulcanite taper stem was oxidized and calcified. There are light tooth marks and chatter on both sides near the button. Jeff took photos of the pipe before he started the cleanup. Jeff took photos show the condition of the bowl and the stem. The photos of the bowl and rim show the cake in the bowl and the lava overflowing onto the rim top. The rustication on the top of the bowl and the inner and outer edge of the rim are pretty well covered in lava. It was hard to know what the inner edge and top really looked like until we cleaned it. The silver cosmetic band was heavily oxidized and almost black. The taper stem was oxidized, calcified and had tooth chatter and marks on both sides of the stem near the button. The photos of the sides and heel of the bowl show some stunning and unique rustication all around the pipe. The finish makes the bowl and shank have an almost walnut texture. The next photo shows the etched or engraved with a name on the underside of shank. It reads House of Robertson. The silver band has a faint Sterling Silver stamping on it.I am including the information that I found when I received my first of the House of Robertson Pipes. I found a link on Pipedia that gave me the only information I could find on the brand. I include that in total as it is interesting to read.

“House of Robertson” was in business for many years, but alas, closed their doors in 1999. They were located in Boise, Idaho. They are noted for making rather large and interesting pipes. Thayne Robertson was a Master Mason, AF & AM, and started the shop about 1947 and his son Jon started working there in 1970 when he finished college, along with Thayne’s daughter. Thayne and his son started making the big pipes at that time, and made them together until 1987 when Thayne passed away. Jon kept the store and his sister moved on to other things. The House of Robertson appears to have closed around 1999 (https://pipedia.org/wiki/Robertson).

Since then I have worked on a lot of House of Robertson pipes and have been able to track down more information. I am including a link to a Catalogue that I picked up on eBay. I am also including a biography of Thayne Robertson that I found on Facebook from a fellow in Boise, Idaho. It is an interesting read into the mind of the pipe maker. Now it was time to work on the pipe itself. When it gets to Vancouver it my turn to contribute to its restoration. Jeff did a great job cleaning the pipe on the inside and outside. He reamed the bowl with a PipNet pipe reamer and cleaned up the remnants with the Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife. He scrubbed out the mortise and the airway in the shank and stem with alcohol, cotton swabs and pipe cleaners. He scrubbed the exterior of the bowl with a tooth brush and Murphy’s Oil Soap to remove the dust in the rustication on the bowl and shank as well as the smooth portions. He rinsed it under running water. He dried it off with a soft cloth. Once the dust and debris were removed the finish was dull but appeared to be in excellent condition. He soaked the stem in Briarville’s Pipe Stem Deoxidizer and rinsed it under warm water to remove the deoxidizer gel solution. I took photos of the pipe to show its condition before I started my work on it. I took a photo of the bowl and rim top to show how well it had cleaned up. There is some rim darkening but you can see the rustication on the top of the bowl. The stem tooth marks and chatter are very light.I took a photo of the engraving on the underside of the shank. It is clear and reads as noted above. I also took the stem off the pipe and took a photo of the parts to give a sense of the proportions of the pipe. It is a beauty.I started my work on the pipe by dealing with the darkening on the inner edge of the rim and the darkening on the rim top with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper. It looked much better when finished. However, there was still some darkening in the rustication on the back of the rim top. I scrubbed it with Mark Hoover’s Before & After Briar Cleaner and was able to remove a lot more of the darkening. I put it on the area with my finger tips and worked it into the surface with a tooth brush. I worked over the area with a brass bristle wire brush and then rinsed it off with warm water. The end result is far better than when I started though there is still a bit of darkening. I used an Oak stain pen to touch up the rim top and the cleaned area and the finish look good. I worked Before & After Restoration Balm deep into the smooth finish to clean, enliven and protect the briar. I hand rubbed it with my fingers and a shoe brush to work it into the finish then set it aside to dry for 10-15 minutes. I wiped it off with a soft cloth. I buffed the bowl with a cotton cloth to polish it. It really began to have a deep shine in the briar. The rim top is looking much better. I took some photos of the bowl at this point to mark the progress in the restoration. The rustication on the bowl stands out with interesting lines moving across the sides of the bowl and the shank. I set the bowl aside and turned my attention to the stem. I “painted” the vulcanite surface with the flame of a lighter – constantly moving the flame over the tooth marks and was able to lift many of them. I filled in those that remained with black rubberized CA glue. Once it cured I flattened the repairs with needle files. I sanded the stem with 220 grit sandpaper to blend the repairs into the surface. I sanded the stem with the 2 inch square 320-3500 grit sanding pads. I wiped down the stem after each sanding pad with Obsidian Oil. I polished out the scratch marks left behind by the sandpaper. The stem looked very good.I polished the vulcanite stem with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding it with 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped the stem down after each sanding pad with Obsidian Oil and set it aside to dry. I polished it further with Before & After Pipe Polish – using both the Fine and Extra Fine Polishes. I gave it a rubdown with Obsidian Oil one last time and set it aside. I put the House of Robertson Rusticated Walnut with a taper stem back together and worked the pipe over on the buffing wheel using Blue Diamond to lightly polish the stem. I buffed the bowl and stem to raise the gloss on the briar and the vulcanite. I gave the pipe multiple coats of carnauba wax. I buffed the entire pipe with a clean buffing pad to raise the shine. I hand buffed it with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The finished the House of Robertson Walnut is shown in the photos below. The medium brown stains on the rusticated walnut shaped bowl works well with the rich black of the vulcanite stem. The dimensions of the pipe are: Length: 6 inches, Height: 2 inches, Outside Diameter: 1 ½ inches, Diameter of the chamber: ¾ inches. The weight of the pipe is 42 grams/1.45 ounces. This is an interesting piece of briar with a rustication that looks like a walnut shell on the bowl and shank. I really like how the briar and the vulcanite work well together. This one will soon be on the rebornpipes store. If you are interested in adding a House of Robertson to your collection this may well be the one for you. Restoring and Restemming a BBB Own Make Thorneycroft Sand blast Canadian 506

The next pipe I decided to work on is one from a Dan in South Carolina. He contacted me several weeks ago now about a pipe that he had come across in his things that was on that his mom had picked up for him. Now 16 or 17 years later he decided it is time to work on it. He wrote me the email below regarding this pipe and how he came upon. It piqued my interest because to be honest with you I love all things BBB.

Hello,
I recently stumbled on an old billiard pipe that my mom had bought me at an antique store while I packing up for a move. I was 16 or 17 at the time so I couldn’t use it and basically forgot about it until now, at 33, I’m starting to get into pipe tobacco more and more. The pipe has the “BBB” inside a diamond with “OWN MAKE” underneath that on the top of the shank, and “THORNEYCROFT Made In ENGLAND” with “506” just below it on the underside of the shank.

The problem is it has no stem, and the end of the shank where the stem would fit into, has many marks that I can’t tell whether they are chew marks or if they are just a part of the grain etc. To my very untrained eye the pipe seems to be in OK condition otherwise.

Being very new to this hobby and not knowing many resources yet or really what to do, and seeing your restorative work, I’d like to ask if you restore pipes for people or if you might be able to point me in the right direction on how I should go about making this pipe smokeable once again, or if it might not be worth it except for sentimentality sake. I’m able to provide pictures of the pipe if needed as well.

I wrote Dan back and asked him to send me some photos of the pipe so that I could see what I was dealing with in this pipe. He sent some amazing photos of various angles of the pipe and I was hooked. I asked him to send it up and I would restore and restem it for him. Here are the photos that he included for me. The first four photos are overall views of the pipe as a whole. The craggy sandblast, the typical rustication on the shank end that I have seen on most of these Thorneycroft pipes, and the delicate but classic look of a Canadian are all well captured. Dan sent photos of the bowl and rim top as well as photos of the sides of the bowl. I appreciate the detail in these photos. The bowl shot shows the tar and cake on the sides and heel of the bowl and the lava build up in the sandblast of the rim top. It should clean up fairly easy. He also notes with a red circle what appears to be a chip on the left side of the bowl on the outer edge of the rim. The more I examine it the more I think it is probably a part of the blast. But I will know more once I have it in hand. His close up photos of the shank show the rustication and the washed out stain on the shank end. I think it is the typical BBB rustication that I have seen on the shank end of the Canadians and long shank pipes in the Thorneycroft line. Dan did a great job capturing the stamping on the shank top and underside. It reads as he noted in his opening email.He took close up photos of the rustication as well. It is rugged and I have to say that I like it. Once it is restained it will look quite nice. The photo of the shank end shows that there are no crack in the shank. There is a nick on the lower right side that is probably a flaw in the briar.I did a search on Pipephil’s site (http://www.pipephil.eu/logos/en/logo-bbb.html) and looked for the specific Thorneycroft line. The second pipe in the list is stamped the same way as the one that I am working on and the stamping on the stem is the same. The Made in England stamp is identical to the second one. I looked on Pipedia and found several references to the BBB Own Make Thorneycroft pipe but nothing specific (https://pipedia.org/wiki/BBB). I also found an advertisement courtesy of Doug Valitchka from 1957 that had a great description of the Thorneycroft that I include below. It reads as follows:

Beautifully balanced, superbly lightweight and mellow smoking… these qualities have made the BBB Own Make Thorneycroft famous. First tough, age-old Algerian briar is carefully selected and cured then the bowls are carefully hand-turned. Now comes the special process of sand- erosion. The soft parts of the briar are literally blasted away leaving a hard bowl of unusual beauty, durability and sweetness. A mouthpiece of finest English Ebionite, inlaid with the famed metal emblem, and a specia dry smoking condenser tube complete the picture. Available in all 24 BBB shapes…I took some photos of the bowl as it was when I unpacked it. It was stamped as Dan noted above and was clear and readable. The rough shank end of the pipe was not damaged but had lost the stain that had originally coloured it. The little nick in the shank end does not damage the airway in the shank. The nicks that were noted on the edge of left side of the bowl appeared to me to be part of the blast and should be left as is. The bowl had a light cake on the walls and there was a light lava coat on the rim top where it had filled in some of the blast. The inner edge of the rim was in excellent condition with no damage. The outer edge had no damage either but there was some roughness to it due to the sand blast finish on the edge. It looked very good however. I took photos of the bowl to show the condition when I received it from Dan. I have included them below. I was hoping I had a BBB stem for the Canadian but I did not have one with the brass insert. I did have one that was a pretty decent fit. It would need to be adjusted in terms of the top, bottom and sides of the stem to fit the shank dimensions but it was the right length and shape for the pipe. It had a great shape on the slot that would give a good spread to the smoke.Now it was time to clean up the bowl. Since the cake was thin I used a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife to scrape out the cake that was in the bowl. I took it back to bare briar and then sanded the walls with a piece of dowel wrapped with 220 grit sandpaper. The bowl walls were in very good condition with no checking or burn damage.I wiped off the bowl with a damp cloth and was amazed at how little dust came off the finish. Dan had obviously wiped it down before he sent it. I also wiped down the rim top and it was quite clean as well. I used a black and a walnut stain pen to stain the shank end rustication to match the rest of the briar. It looked very good. Once it was buffed and polished it would be a perfect match. I used a brass bristle wire brush to knock off the remaining debris in the sandblast on the rim top. It looks very good with some deep blast sections on the top right and left. Beautiful blast in all ways.I cleaned out the internals of the shank, mortise and the airway in both the shank and the new stem with alcohol, cotton swabs and pipe cleaners. The pipe smells fresh and ready to smoke again.Now that it was clean it was time to do a few minor surface repairs. The first of these was a small repair to a flaw on the shank end on the inner edge of the mortise on the lower left side. I used a tooth pick to put a drop of CA glue in the flaw and smooth it out on the surface. I did the same to the pit on the outer edge of the rim on the right side toward the back. Both were cosmetic rather than structural but it improved the look of the bowl in those spots. I smoothed out the repair on the shank end with a folded piece of sandpaper and touched the paper to the repair on the rim edge as well. I stained both with a Walnut stain pen and blended them into the surface. I rubbed the briar down with Before & After Restoration Balm. I worked it into the briar with my fingertips and a shoe brush to work it into the finish. The product works to clean, enliven and preserve the briar. I let it sit for 10 minutes then I buffed it with a cotton cloth to deepen the shine. The depths of the blast in the briar really comes alive with the balm. I worked on the fit of the stem to the shank with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper. I needed to reduce the diameter of the stem from top to bottom and from right to left. I worked on it for quite a bit of time sanding, sanding and more sanding until the fit to the shank was good and the transition between the shank and stem was smooth.I polished the stem once it fit with 320-3500 grit sanding pads. I wiped it down after each pad with a cloth impregnated with Obsidian Oil. By the end the stem took on a good shine and the fit was very good.I polished the vulcanite stem with micromesh sanding pads – 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped it down with Obsidian Oil after each sanding pad. I used Before & After Pipe Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine to further the stem. The photos below show the polished stem. I am pretty happy with the restoration and restemming of this BBB Own Make Thorneycroft Sandblast Canadian. There is a sandblast finish to the bowl that is rugged and rich looking. The newly fit stem is clean and smooth and looks good on the shank. I put the stem back on the bowl and carefully buffed the pipe with Blue Diamond on the buffing wheel using a light touch on the briar. I gave the bowl multiple coats of Conservator’s Wax and the stem multiple coats of carnauba wax on the buffing wheel and followed that by buffing the entire pipe with a clean buffing pad. I hand buffed the pipe with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The finished BBB Own Make Thorneycroft Canadian fits nicely in the hand and feels great. Give the finished pipe a look in the photos below. The dimensions of the pipe are Length: 5 ¾ inches, Height: 1 ¾ inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 1/8 inches, Chamber diameter: ¾ of an inch. The weight of the pipe was 30grams/1.02ounces. I will be sending it back to Dan shortly. I look forward to hearing what he thinks of it. The worst of Five Peterson’s in for restoration that are in rough condition – a burned out bowl and damaged stem

Yesterday afternoon I was visited by a pipe man here in Vancouver named Sergey who had five Peterson’s pipes that he wanted me to work on. They are shown in the photo below. In the left column from top to bottom: Peterson’s of Dublin Kinsale XL17, Peterson’s of Dublin Filter 68, Peterson’s of Dublin Kinsale XL16 Rusticated Pipe. In the right column from top to bottom Peterson’s of Dublin Kinsale XL16 and the bottom pipe is a Peterson’s of Dublin Kinsale XL14. All five pipes were all thickly caked and had thick lava on the rim top. The cake is so thick that I could not put my little finger in the bowl it was so heavily caked. My guess was that the bottom of the bowl was lower than the entrance of the airway into the bowl. The Rusticated Kinsale XL17 also had a burn out in the front bottom of the bowl that would take a lot more time than just a simple clean up. I would know more about the condition of each of the bowls once I had reamed and cleaned them. Sergey was travelling soon and he chose at least two of them that he wanted to take with him on his trip so those would be first. I have finished four of the five pipes and he picked them up and was pleased with them. The fifth of these was in the worst condition. I left it until last and now it was time to work on it – a Peterson’s of Dublin Kinsale XL16. I was not sure I would finish but he would love to take it on his travels.
I took photos of the Peterson’s of Dublin XL16 before I started working on it. This was Sergey’s favourite pipe and his concern was that it had a hole in the bottom toward the front. The finish is very dirty with oils and dirt ground into the briar. The rim top is thickly covered with tarry lava overflowing from the heavy cake in the bowl. The cake was thick and heavy all the way to the bottom of the bowl. In the heal of the bowl there was a hole about the size of pencil lead and the bowl was quite a bit deeper than the entrance of the airway from the shank. The vulcanite stem is also very dirty. There was oxidation, calcification and the P-lip had been cut off on the end. There was no button edge and he would like to have that added on the bottom of the stem surface. There oxidation, calcification and also some light tooth damage on both sides ahead of the remaining button. The P stamp on the left side of the stem is a gold P that is damaged. I took closeup photos of the rim top and bowl to give a sense of the dirty condition of the pipe and the thickness of the cake and lava on the bowl top. The rim top and edges look to be damaged under the lava coat but the cleanup will reveal the facts. I also took photos of the stem to show the top and underside ahead of the button.I took photos of the stamping on the shank sides. It was faint but readable through the grime and debris. It read as noted in the above paragraphs. I also took the stem off the shank and took a photo of the look and proportion of the pipe. I took a photo of the burnout in the heel of the bowl. It was about the size of pencil lead on the outside but the inside of the bowl was more extensively damaged. This one would take some extra work to bring it back to life.I started my work on the pipe by reaming the thick cake in the bowl. I could not even assess fully the burnout damage until it was reamed and cleaned. I used a PipNet pipe reamer with the first cutting head to take back the cake. I followed that with the second and the third cutting head. I was able to remove all of the cake. The cake in the bottom third of the bowl was incredibly hard and took a repeated reaming of that portion. I used a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife to scrape the remainder of the cake out of the bowl and clean up the bottom of the bowl. I sanded the bowl walls with 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around a piece of dowel. With the bowl cleaned out I was able to determine that the bowl bottom was significantly below the entrance of the airway. It was quite thin and the hole on outside was only the beginning of the issues. I would need to repair the burn through and then build up the bottom of the bowl to the entrance of the airway. It would be further protection for the repaired bottom of the bowl and help it from further burning out. The issues with the rim top and inner edge would also need to be addressed. I decided to open up the burned-out area and see how extensive it was and how deep it was into the briar surrounding pin hole. I started with a sharp blade and cleaned up the opening and took out the brittle pieces of briar around the hole. I opened the hole further with a large drill bit and smoothed out the edges of the hole to the point it was solid briar.I scrubbed the externals of the bowl and shank with undiluted Murphy’s Oil Soap and a tooth brush. I rinsed it with warm running water and repeated the scrubbing and rinsing process until the pipe was clean and looked better. I cut a piece of briar and shaped it with my Dremel and sanding drum to fit the hole. I gave the inner edge a bevel to fit the edges of the hole. I rounded the inside of the plug with the Dremel to follow the flow of the bowl bottom. It would help build up the bottom significantly. I fit the plug in place on the bowl bottom and took some photos to give a sense of the look. Once it is glued in place and cured I will rusticate the patch to match the rest of the bowl.I mixed up a batch of two part JB Weld and coated the inner edge of the drilled out hole in the bowl bottom. I inserted the plug in the hole and used a tooth pick to fill in the gaps around the plug on the exterior of the bowl. I used a dental spatula to fill in the edges around the inside of the bowl and pressed it in place with a folded pipe cleaner. I built up the bowl bottom to the bottom of the airway entrance. I set it aside for the night to harden and cure. In the morning when I got up I shaped the plug with my Dremel and sanding drum to follow the flow of the bowl bottom. I clean up the edges of the  plug and the surrounding briar with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper. It was looking pretty good at this point. I used a piece of dowel with 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around it to smooth out the bowl walls. I used some clear CA glue and some briar dust to fill in low spots around the front of the plug. I cleaned it up once it dried with a brass bristle wire brush to clean up the repair area. I sanded the edges of area with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper. It was a solid, smooth finish. All that remained was for me to rusticated it to match the surrounding briar.

I rusticated the repaired area with a Dremel and a series of burrs to match the rustication to the surrounding briar. I failed to take a photo of the bowl before I stained it. However, I used an Oak and a Mahogany stain pen to approximate the colour of the briar surrounding the repair. I took a photo of the various burrs I used with the Dremel to achieve the rustication patter that matches the rest of the bowl. I used a 3500 grit sanding pad to knock off the colour on the high points and give it a sense of depth. I rubbed the briar down with Before & After Restoration Balm. I worked it into the briar with my fingertips to work it into the finish. The product works to clean, enliven and preserve the briar. I let it sit for 10 minutes then I buffed it with a cotton cloth to deepen the shine. The briar really comes alive with the balm. I mixed a bowl coating of sour cream and charcoal powder and painted the walls and bottom of the bowl to protect it during the break in period. I applied it to the walls and heel of the bowl with a folded pipe cleaner. I set it aside to let it cure. It would take about 24 hours for it to cure. I set the bowl aside and turned my attention to the stem. The stem was in as much of a mess as the bowl. The P-lip had been cut off and the underside of the stem was flat at an angle toward the opening of the airway in the end. The top of the P was missing other a thin ridge to approximate a button. It was roughly done and did not leave much to work with. I looked through my Peterson stems for a replacement but the tenon was odd sized and it was made for a 5MM filter so I had nothing. That left me with a decision. I decided to shape the stem end and build a fishtail button on the end. I would have to build up the button edges on both sides and I would need to try to cut a slot instead of just an odd shaped hole. With that in mind I had my hands full on this stem.

I rebuilt the button end on the top and bottom with rubberized black CA glue. I layered it in place after each layer cured. It took time to build up the layers and reshape it with files and sandpaper, but I like the new look much better. Once the button was solidly in place and the shaping was finished on it I still needed to clean up the shape and smooth it out and give it more of a sense of flow. I sharpened the edge on the top and underside of the button. I used several needle files to smooth out the edge and top. I smoothed out the top surface of the button on each side and on the end with a piece of 220 grit sandpaper. I used a series of round and oval needle files to shape the slot in the stem end. I took it for an out of round airway exit to an oval. I also used a slot cutting tool to continue to reshape the slot. I used a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out the inside of the slot. Once finished the slot looked much better. I polished the stem and the button with 320-3500 grit sanding pads. I wiped it down with a cloth impregnated with Obsidian Oil after each sanding pad to protect and polish the stem surface.I polished the stem with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding with 1500-12000 grit pads. Once again I wiped it down between each pad with Obsidian Oil. I further polished it with Before and After Stem Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine. It looked very good. This Rusticated Peterson’s of Dublin Kinsale XL16 Bent Billiard with a Taper Stem has a beautiful rusticated finish that has a new lease on life. I repaired the burnout in the heel of the bowl by fitting it with a briar plug and then rusticating it to match the rest of the bowl. The medium brown/black/mahogany finish gives depth to the rustication around the bowl and shank. It has a classic look of a Peterson’s pipe. The rebuilt and polished black vulcanite taper stem adds to the mix. I put the stem back on the bowl and buffed the pipe with Blue Diamond on the buffing wheel being careful to not buff the stamping. I gave the bowl multiple coats of Conservator’s Wax and the stem multiple coats of carnauba wax on the buffing wheel and followed that by buffing it with a clean buffing pad. I hand buffed the pipe with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The finished Peterson’s of Dublin Kinsale XL16 Rusticated Bent Billiard is quite nice and feels great in the hand. Give the finished pipe a look in the photos below. The dimensions of the pipe are Length: 6 inches, Height: 2 inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 ½ inch, Chamber diameter: 7/8 of an inch. He pressed to pick this one up on Friday evening. I did not promise but I know it is his favourite pipe so it is ready for him.

Restemming and Restoring an Astley’s Sandblast Cherrywood

Not too long ago I received and email from Nick, a fellow up the coast of British Columbia. He was not too far away and had gotten my information from City Cigar, a pipe and cigar shop that I do a lot of repairs for. He wrote the following email about two pipes he want me to restem for him.

Dear Steve,

I have a couple of pipes in need of new stems. City cigar suggested you might be able to help.

One is a diplomat, the other a cherrywood. Are you able to make new ones if I get the bowls to you?

I asked him to send me some photos of the pipe so I could see what he had and what I would be working with. I have a pretty good idea of the stems that I have and could tell him quite quickly once I saw the pipe if it was something I could work on.

He wrote back and sent me another brief email and included two photos of his pipes. This email made me think twice about the pipe because of what he wrote.

In trying to pull the tenon in the silver collared pipe, the diplomat I broke off a brass screw. It will need drilling I think. Best NickThe pipes arrived this week and I was surprised to find that they were both Astley’s pipes. I chose to work on the Cherrywood first. It had a lovely sandblast finish what was dirty and was stamped on a smooth panel on the underside of the shank. It read Astley’s [over] 109 Jermyn St. [over] London. The stamping was clear and readable. The bowl of the pipe had a moderate cake with some dust and debris in the sandblast of the rim top. The inner and outer edges of the bowl looked good. The pipe was missing the stem but Nick had sent along the snapped tenon in the bag with the pipes. I took photos of the stem to get a sense of what it looked like before I started my clean up. I took a photo of the rim top to capture the condition of the bowl and rim top. I like to capture that condition before I started my work on the pipe. You can see the dust in the sandblast on the rim top and the cake in the bowl. It is a nice looking pipe.I took a photo of the stamping on the underside of the shank and it is much clearer than the photo shows. It reads as noted above. Interestingly there was no shape number on the shank so it was a bit of a mystery pipe.Before I started my work on the pipe I did a bit of reading. I knew that I had work on an Astley’s Cherrywood previously and done a blog on it. A quick search on the blog took me to it. Here is a link (https://rebornpipes.com/2014/09/27/breathing-new-life-into-an-astleys-48-cherrywood/). I quote a portion of the blog below on the pipe. I found that it was a pipe that had a similar shape and had a shape number. I am also including some photos of the pipe when I had finished the restoration. The finish was not a sandblast but a rustication pattern that was very tight. The shape was the same as the one I was working on. This pipe was stamped on the heel of the bowl rather than the shank but it was the same. What was good about it was that it showed me the kind of stem that was originally on the pipe. That would guide me in fitting a new stem.This bowl had been stamped on the smooth bottom and read Astleys over 109 Jermyn St. Under that was stamped London over 48. I looked up the shape in an old Astleys catalogue (page pictured below) and found the 48 was a Round Cherrywood Briar. The description stated that it was a copy of an old English Cherrywood with a flat base. The bend on the stem can also be seen in the photo below from the catalogue.I started my work on the pipe by reaming it with a PipNet reamer using the second cutting head to take the cake back to bare briar. I cleaned up the reaming with a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife. I sanded the walls of the bowl with 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around a piece of dowel to smooth out the walls. There was no checking or burn marks on the bowl walls it looked very good. I used a brass bristle wire brush to clean out the debris in the sandblast finish on the rim top. It looked much better at this point.I cleaned out the inside of the pipe – airway into the shank, the mortise and shank walls with pipe cleaners, alcohol and cotton swabs. I worked on it until it was very clean.I scrubbed the exterior of the pipe with undiluted Murphy’s Oil Soap and a tooth brush. I rinsed it off with warm running water and dried it off with a soft towel. The bowl looked good. The rim top had some fading that I would need to restain. I restained the faded rim top with a Mahogany stain pen to match the rest of the bowl and shank. The match to the rest of the bowl is quite perfect and it really makes the grain pop in the sandblast.I worked some Before & After Restoration Balm into the surface of the briar with my fingertips and a shoe brush to clean, enliven and protect it. I let the balm sit for a little while and then buffed with a cotton cloth to raise the shine. The following photos show the bowl at this point in the restoration process. I am very happy with the results. With the bowl completed it was time to pick out a stem to fit the shank of the pipe. I wanted it to be the same diameter as the shank and fit snug in the shank. I went through my stems and found one that looked a lot like the Astley’s stem on the Cherrywood in the photos above. It is a saddle stem with a thin blade. It is used but it should clean up very well.
I cleaned out the airway in the stem with pipe cleaners and alcohol. The internals cleaned up very well. I also cleaned up the externals at the same time.I created a slight step down on the end of the tenon to secure a snug fit in the shank. I started the process with files and finished the shape with a Dremel and a sanding drum. Once it was finished it looked very good. It was similar in shape to the tenon on the Heritage pipe. It was going to work very well.I filled in the tooth marks along the edge of the button with some rubberized black super glue. By this time the repairs on the stem had cured so I flattened them out with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper. I worked over the button edge. It was beginning to shape up well.I sanded the stem with 320-3500 grit sanding pads and wiped the stem down after each pad to remove the sanding debris. It began to take on a deep shine.I polished the vulcanite stem with micromesh sanding pads – 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped it down with a damp cloth after each sanding pad. I used Before & After Pipe Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine to further polish the stem. I wiped it down with a final coat of Obsidian Oil and set it aside. The sandblast Astley’s 109 Jermyn St. London Cherrywood is a real beauty and the finish and shape are well done and have a classic English look. The newly fit vulcanite saddle stem polished up on the buffing wheel with Blue Diamond and had a rich glow. I gave the bowl multiple coats of Conservator’s Wax and the stem multiple coats of carnauba wax on the buffing wheel and followed that by buffing the entire pipe with a clean buffing pad. I hand buffed the pipe with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The finished Astley’s Cherry with a saddle stem fits nicely in the hand and feels great. Give the finished pipe a look in the photos below. The dimensions of the pipe are Length: 6 inches, Height: 2 inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 ½ inches, Chamber diameter: ¾ of an inch. The weight of the pipe is 1.48 ounces/42 grams. I have one more pipe of Nick’s to restem and then I will be sending them back to him. Fourth of Five Peterson’s in for restoration that are in rough condition

In the left column from top to bottom: Peterson’s of Dublin Kinsale XL17, Peterson’s of Dublin Filter 68, Peterson’s of Dublin Kinsale XL16 Rusticated Pipe. In the right column from top to bottom Peterson’s of Dublin Kinsale XL16 and the bottom pipe is a Peterson’s of Dublin Kinsale XL14. All five pipes were all thickly caked and had thick lava on the rim top. The cake is so thick that I could not put my little finger in the bowl it was so heavily caked. The fourth of these that he wanted is the next one I chose to work on. It was the Peterson’s of Dublin Filter 68. I took photos of the Peterson’s of Dublin Filter 68 before I started working on it. This was Sergey’s first pipe and his concern was that it smoked hot. The finish is very dirty with oils and dirt ground into the briar. There is some spotty varnish on the finish that may well have contributed to the pipe smoking hot to the touch. The briar actually looks very good with great grain. The rim top is thickly covered with tarry lava overflowing from the heavy cake in the bowl. The cake was thick and heavy all the way to the bottom of the bowl. The vulcanite stem is also very dirty. There was oxidation, calcification and tooth marks and chatter on both sides of the stem ahead of the button and lip edge. The P stamp on the left side of the stem is a gold P that is faint and faded. The issues with the rim top and inner edge would also need to be addressed. I scrubbed out the internals with 99% isopropyl alcohol, cotton swabs and pipe cleaners. I worked them through the airway in the shank and stem, the mortise. It took a few cleaners and swabs to really clean it but it is looking and smelling much better.I scrubbed the externals of the bowl and shank with undiluted Murphy’s Oil Soap and a tooth brush. I rinsed it with warm running water and repeated the scrubbing and rinsing process until the pipe was clean and looked better. I wiped down the bowl with acetone (fingernail polish remover) to remove the spotty varnish coat on the briar. The varnish may be contributing to the pipe smoking hot. At this point the briar began to look good. At this point I decided to address the rim top and edge damage. There burn damage to the inner edge and onto the rim top. I wanted the top to be smooth once again and also wanted to bring the bowl back to round. I started by topping the bowl with 220 grit sandpaper on a topping board to smooth out the damage on the rim surface and clean up the outer edge damage. I was able to significantly clean up the damage. The other pipes I have worked on for Sergey have all had a slightly bevelled inner edge so I would need to do that with this pipe as well. I used 220 grit sandpaper and a wooden sphere to give the inner edge a bevel. I used a wooden sphere and a piece of 220 grit sandpaper to work on the edge and give it a slight bevel. Once finished it looked much better. I used a Cherry stain pen to touch up the rim top to match the rest of the bowl. I did this before sanding the bowl as I would also sand the top at the same time. I think the match was going to be perfect. We would see.I sanded the bowl with 320-3500 grit sanding pads to remove some of the darkening around the bowl. I wiped it down after each sanding pad with a damp cloth to remove the sanding debris. It really began to look very good. I touched up the rim top once more with a Walnut Stain Pen. The colour matched surrounding stain on the briar. Polishing it would blend it very well.I polished the bowl with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding with 1500-12000 grit pads. Each pad gave it more of a shine. I wiped the bowl down after each pad with a damp cloth. By the end the bowl looked very good. I rubbed the briar down with Before & After Restoration Balm. I worked it into the briar with my fingertips to work it into the finish. The product works to clean, enliven and preserve the briar. I let it sit for 10 minutes then I buffed it with a cotton cloth to deepen the shine. The briar really comes alive with the balm. It worked better than I expected but it was not flawless. This Peterson’s of Dublin Filter 68 Bent Billiard with a Taper Stem has a beautiful smooth finish that was slightly worn. The medium brown finish highlights some great grain around the bowl and shank. It has a classic look of a Peterson’s pipe. The polished black vulcanite taper stem adds to the mix. I put the stem back on the bowl and buffed the pipe with Blue Diamond on the buffing wheel being careful to not buff the stamping. I gave the bowl and the stem multiple coats of carnauba wax on the buffing wheel and followed that by buffing it with a clean buffing pad. I hand buffed the pipe with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The finished Peterson’s of Dublin Filter 68 is quite nice and feels great in the hand. Give the finished pipe a look in the photos below. The dimensions of the pipe are Length: 6 inches, Height: 1 ¾ inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 ¼ inch, Chamber diameter: ¾ of an inch. I would need to build up the bottom of the bowl slightly to the entrance of the airway. It would be further protection for the bottom of the bowl and help it from burning out. The issues with the rim top and inner edge would also need to be addressed. At this point I decided to address the rim top and edge damage. There was serious damage to the inner edge. The front of the rim top had been burned and had a slight dip in it. The outer edge in front of the burned rim top was also damaged. I wanted the top to be smooth once again and also wanted to bring the bowl back to round. I started by topping the bowl with 220 grit sandpaper on a topping board to smooth out the damage on the rim surface and clean up the outer edge damage. I was able to significantly clean up the damage. The Kinsales that I have worked on for Sergey have all had a slightly bevelled inner edge so I would need to do that with this pipe as well. It would also clean up the out of round bowl a bit more.I used a wooden sphere and a piece of 220 grit sandpaper to work on the edge and give it a slight bevel. Once finished it looked much better.I scrubbed out the internals with 99% isopropyl alcohol, cotton swabs and pipe cleaners. I worked them through the airway in the shank and stem, the mortise. It took a few cleaners and swabs to really clean it but it is looking and smelling much better.I scrubbed the externals of the bowl and shank with undiluted Murphy’s Oil Soap and a tooth brush. I rinsed it with warm running water and repeated the scrubbing and rinsing process until the pipe was clean and looked better. I used a Cherry stain pen to touch up the rim top to match the rest of the bowl. I did this before sanding the bowl as I would also sand the top at the same time. I think the match was going to be perfect. We would see.I sanded the bowl with 320-3500 grit sanding pads to remove some of the darkening around the bowl. I wiped it down after each sanding pad with a damp cloth to remove the sanding debris. It really began to look very good. I polished the bowl with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding with 1500-12000 grit pads. Each pad gave it more of a shine. I wiped the bowl down after each pad with a damp cloth. By the end the bowl looked very good. Once I had I polished the bowl I addressed overly deep bowl bottom. I filled in the bottom with a mix of cigar ash and water to make a pipe mud. I pressed it into place with a tamper to flatten it. I put a pipe cleaner in the airway so that I would only fill it to the bottom of the pipe cleaner. I set it aside to dry and harden. It looks much better. It will take awhile to harden but it should deal with the damage. If it shrinks when it cures I will need to fill it in a bit more. At this point I rubbed the briar down with Before & After Restoration Balm. I worked it into the briar with my fingertips to work it into the finish. The product works to clean, enliven and preserve the briar. I let it sit for 10 minutes then I buffed it with a cotton cloth to deepen the shine. The briar really comes alive with the balm. I set the bowl aside and turned my attention to the stem. I “painted” the tooth marks on both sides with the flame of a Bic lighter. I filled in the two deeper marks on the underside of the stem that remained with black rubberized CA glue and set it aside to cure. Once it had hardened I sanded the with 220 grit sandpaper and smoothed them out. The P logo on the left side of the stem was so faint and damaged but I tried to touch it up with some Rub’n Buff Antique Gold. I worked it into the remaining stamp with a tooth pick. It worked better than I expected but it was not flawless. I sanded the stem with 320-3500 grit sanding pads to take out the scratching and remaining oxidation. I wiped it down after each pad with some Obsidian Oil. It is looking much better now.I polished the stem with micromesh sanding pads – dry sanding with 1500-12000 grit pads. Once again I wiped it down between each pad with Obsidian Oil. I further polished it with Before and After Stem Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine. It looked very good. This Peterson’s of Dublin Kinsale X14 Rhodesian with a Taper Stem has a beautiful smooth finish that was slightly worn. The reddish brown finish highlights some great grain around the bowl and shank. It has a classic look of a Peterson’s pipe. The polished black vulcanite taper stem adds to the mix. I put the stem back on the bowl and buffed the pipe with Blue Diamond on the buffing wheel being careful to not buff the stamping. I gave the bowl and the stem multiple coats of carnauba wax on the buffing wheel and followed that by buffing it with a clean buffing pad. I hand buffed the pipe with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The finished Peterson’s of Dublin Kinsale XL14 is quite nice and feels great in the hand. Give the finished pipe a look in the photos below. The dimensions of the pipe are Length: 6 inches, Height: 2 inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 ¼ inch, Chamber diameter: 7/8 of an inch. The weight of the pipe is 2.36 ounces/67 grams. Thanks for walking through the restoration with me as I worked over another beautiful pipe. Fixing the Unfixable

Strap yourself in – this is going to be a wild ride! My cousin-in-law likes to send me pipe projects that are a little off the beaten track. They also usually end up being quite tricky and this one is no exception. He sent me two meerschaum-lined pipes that have been badly damaged and require repair. One pipe is a Kiko, from Tanganyika in eastern Africa, and the other is from Ropp, the venerable pipe-maker of St Claude, France. Although the briar exteriors are fine, the meerschaum interiors of the bowls are a complete disaster. The Kiko looks as though it’s probably been dropped at some point. Meerschaum is quite fragile, so no wonder it cracked so badly. The Ropp is equally bad, but I think that’s because it was badly reamed rather than dropped. Who knows and, quite frankly, the answer is of academic interest. They both suffered from having a cake which is not a good idea for meerschaum. I subjected these pipes to my usual cleaning procedures – for both stem and stummel – but I’m going to gloss over those details today. To be clear, both stems were deoxidized, repaired, sanded, and polished. In addition, the briar parts of the stummels were thoroughly cleaned, sanded, and polished too. I also did a thorough, but exceptionally careful, cleaning of the insides. I needed to remove as much filth as possible, but liquids like water, alcohol, etc., don’t do well with meer. As an aside, the Ropp had a substantial crack in the briar and this only added to the complexity of the repairs.In this blog post, I’m skipping writing about the usual stuff in order to focus on the major issue with these pipes – the busted meerschaum lining and how to fix it. In consulting with Steve, he mentioned a post on a blog from a few years ago that talked about repairing this very thing. The blog is called ‘Baccy Pipes’ and the fellow’s name is Troy W. I want to give him full credit for starting me on my research for this job. The curious thing about this repair was that Troy used a mixture of egg white and chalk to mend the broken meerschaum. As he writes:

I had read and heard from other pipe restores that a old late 19th-early 20th century druggist recipe for fixing broken meerschaum was egg whites and finely ground chalk, so that was what I was going to try and fix the meer lined rim with. It is said to have about the same porous properties of meerschaum and imparts no taste to the tobacco.I was immediately intrigued and my brain began to ruminate on this. In the past, Steve and I have both used plaster of Paris when repairing meer-lined bowls. What about egg and chalk? Putting together the ingredients would be no problem: chalk, that is to say, calcium carbonate is easy to acquire. And then a thought struck me – I wonder if I could do an experiment on the properties of both calcium carbonate and a product that’s much closer to meerschaum in composition. Meerschaum is a type of magnesium silicate – and so is talc. They are not identical substances, but surely closer than chalk. If I could buy some pure, unadulterated talc, that might prove to be a good option. Well, it turns out that getting pure talc with absolutely nothing else in it was not as easy as I thought. I did eventually find a small package for sale on Amazon and it ended up being shipped from Germany (no idea why) to my home on the west coast of Canada. Let’s have a quick look at the insides of the two bowls, because they have different problems and very different sized apertures. The Ropp had the much larger bowl, and its insides were more damaged at the bottom. There was a surprising amount of meerschaum missing at the bottom and it is difficult to convey this in photos. However, the photos do clearly show the large chuck missing from the rim. I suspected that, although the width of the bowl meant it would be easier to access, it would require the most work and be the most difficult to repair satisfactorily. The Kiko had its own set of problems. There were also missing chunks on the rim, but the cracks inside were devastating. The width of the bowl meant that I could get nothing larger than my pinky finger inside. A small piece of broken meerschaum fell out from one of the cracks while I was inspecting it. That didn’t bode well. Now let’s start cracking some egg! Obviously, I took two dishes and mixed up a batch of chalk and egg white in one and talc and egg white in the other. Both materials were powdered, so I had no concerns about overly large particles in either mixture. During mixing, the talc seemed grittier than the chalk, but it was difficult to assess this properly and difficult to know how much to mix into the egg white. I put the two blobs on a piece of cardboard for a couple of days and let them set. Once dry, I conducted my own absurdly unscientific compressive strength test on both materials as a way of determining straight away if one material was clearly superior to the other. There wasn’t any obvious difference – and any differences I may have detected could easily have been a figment of my imagination. Both materials seemed about equal. I opted to try the talc first – for no other reason than it was chemically closer to meerschaum.I took both stummels and wrapped all of the wood in painter’s tape. I had nightmarish visions of what could happen to these pipes if I got the eggy goo on them. Better safe than sorry. I started applying the egg/talc mixture to the Kiko first. I wanted to make sure than the cavernous cracks were completely filled with the stuff. I needed a good bond and I added more than I needed – assuming there would be some shrinkage in the drying process. Similarly, I smooshed the mix on the Ropp too, hoping for the best. There’s no way to sugarcoat this: the whole process was a mess. Really a mess. Once the pipes had dried overnight, I took a look and I wasn’t particularly impressed with my work. But a more detailed examination was needed, so I put on a sanding mask and set about removing the excess material. I used sandpapers of various grits on dowels, sandpapers on my fingers, and sandpapers on my topping board. Hmm. The results were ok, but no better than that – and ‘ok’ just isn’t good enough for me.I hadn’t put enough material inside the Ropp – there were still areas that needed to be built up. I also felt that the material on the rims of both pipes was just too brittle – especially on the Kiko. Perhaps I was wrong to try talc.Round two. This time I repeated the entire process with egg white and chalk. Old boys in days of yore used it, so why not me? I won’t bore you by rewriting the same slathering and sanding process as above, but, the chalk mixture yielded no better results than the talc. The extra layer of goo was good insofar as it added more protection to the walls – but the results may have been the same if I’d added more talc. Sadly, the chalk did not seem to improve the frangibility of the rim.Round three. More slathering and sanding. I added a bit more egg/chalk mixture to bulk up areas that needed it and I hoped that perhaps the rim would somehow magically be improved.Round four – yes round four. This time – a slight change. I opted to return to the material that Steve and I have both used successfully in the past – plaster of Paris. This was not a complete redo, as before, but merely touch ups (in some cases aided by a drop of glue). At this point, I was placated by the plaster and felt that the results were acceptable – not perfect, but acceptable. Once the sanding was done, I could remove the painter’s tape and finish the pipes off. The Kiko needed some colour added to the rim after all the topping. I used my furniture pens to match the colour and it came out very well.Both pipes went on the buffing wheel and they look great. This was a very timing-consuming and enormously frustrating process. In the end, I learned quite a few things about the repair of meerschaum. Just like everything else, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. I think egg/talc or egg/chalk is fine for small repairs, where the cracks are small and not structural. But larger repairs require something different: either grafting on a spare piece of meerschaum (which I have done successfully in the past) or using a more reliably solid goo like plaster of Paris.The Kiko and Ropp are much improved and I hope my cousin will like them. Restoring a Castello Old Antiquari KKKK Swan Neck Bent Billiard

A week or so ago I traded some pipes for the two Castello Pipes below. The fellow I traded them with and I both felt we got a great trade. I chose to work on the bottom pipe in the photos below next. It is a sandblast finished Castello that is quite stunning. It is stamped on a smooth panel on the underside of the shank and reads US [followed by] Castello [over] Old Antiquari [followed by] Made in Cantu [over] Italy. That is followed by Kino in script in an oval. The bowl had a light cake and smelled primarily of Virgina tobaccos. There was some light lava on the smooth rim top but the inner and outer edge looked very good. The sandblast finish was dusty but the sandblast grain was beautiful. The acrylic stem has a white Castello bar on the topside of the taper. On the underside it is stamped Hand Made [over] Castello. There was a Softee Bit protector on the stem that had bite marks in it so I was a bit worried what might be underneath. When I removed it there was some light build up along the inner edge of the rubber bit guard but the acrylic was free of any bite marks or chatter. When the pipe arrived, it was in the Castello original box with the rich wood colour. The box is hinged on the back of the box and has no damage on the box but a tear on the back right corner of the lid. The hinge was in good condition. The top of the box has the Castello Castle logo with Trade on the left side and Mark to the right of the mark. Underneath that it is printed Castello [over] Artigianato Della Pipa – Cantu. On the end of the box it is stamped with the Castle logo followed a box with CASTELLO [over] a box for a shape or pipe shape/line designation. Underneath it is stamped Made in Italy.I opened the box and took a photo of the pipe inside. The inside of the cover it is stamped with the logo over PIPA CASTELLO [over] Made in Italy. The box had a cream coloured yellowish suede leather material with the same logo and stamp. The stem had a Softee Bit in place that I removed before I took the photo below.I took photos of the pipe itself to give a sense of what was needed in the cleanup of the bowl and shank. I would need to ream and clean the internals of the bowl and shank. The stem had grime on it where the edge of the Softee Bit was on the stem. There was no tooth damage or chatter on the acrylic surface. I took a photo of the bowl and the rim top. You can see the light lava on the rim top, slightly heavier toward the backside. You can also see the cake in the bowl. It is light to moderate in terms of thickness. The stem surface is undamaged on both sides ahead of the button. Other than the grime left behind by the Softee Bit the stem looks very good.I took a photo of the stamping on the underside and stem. It is clear and readable as noted above. I removed the stem from the shank and tried to capture a bit of the beauty of the birdseye grain on this lovely piece of briar. The grain is the same on both sides with cross grain on the front of the bowl, the back of the bowl and the underside of the shank at the end.I checked on Pipephil’s site (http://www.pipephil.eu/logos/en/logo-castello.html) and found a section on the Old Antiquari. It also had some information on the family line of the Scottis. I included that information below the screen capture of one of the pipes.Castello PIPA CASTELLO di Carlo Scotti & C. was founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti († 1988). Franco Coppo (AKA “Kino”) who married Carlo Scotti’s daughter Savina, manages (2012) the corporate since 1985.

I did a google search on the Castello Old Antiquari Swan Neck Billiard and found a link to an apple shaped Castello Old Antiquari pipe with a very similar profile along the underside of the shank (https://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/castello/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=345891). Chuck Stanion has a brilliant description of the pipe that easily applies to the pipe that I have in hand here. I quote:

The heel of this Castello Apple is quite long, adding to the goose-neck quality of the shape’s silhouette, but it has not been flattened for sitting, so you’ll need a pipe stand. The smooth rim matches the highlights of the sandblast perfectly, and is brightly contrasted by the pure-white mouthpiece. The blast is craggy and deep, offering substantial hand comfort for long smoking sessions. – Chuck Stanion

Now it was time to work on the pipe. I started my work by reaming the pipe. I scraped out the light cake with a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife. I took the cake back to bare briar. I sanded the walls smooth with 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around a piece of dowel. The bowl walls looked very good with no burn damage or checking on the walls. I scraped the smooth rim top with the Fitsall Knife edge. I was able to get the thick grime off. I scrubbed it down with a damp paper towel and it looked much better.I cleaned out he internals of the shank, mortise and airway in the shank and the stem with alcohol, cotton swabs and pipe cleaners.I polished the rim top with micromesh sanding pads. I dry sanded with 1500-12000 grit sanding pads. I wiped the rim top down after each pad with a damp cloth to remove the debris. I touched up the rim top with a Cherry stain pen to match the smooth patch on the bottom of the shank. I scrubbed the externals of the bowl with undiluted Murphy’s Oil Soap and rinsed it off with warm water to remove the soap and the grime. I dried it off with a soft cotton towel. It looked much better at this point and the grain really stood out on the bowl sides. I rubbed the briar down with Before & After Restoration Balm. I worked it into the smooth surface with my fingertips. The product works to clean, enliven and preserve the briar. I let it sit for 10 minutes then I buffed it with a cotton cloth to deepen the shine. The briar really comes alive with the balm. The stem was in such good condition that I polished the acrylic stem with the higher grit micromesh sanding pads – 3200-12000 grit pads. I wiped it down with Obsidian Oil after each sanding pad. I used Before & After Pipe Stem Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine to further polish the stem. This beautiful Castello Old Antiquari Sandblast KKKK Swan Neck Bent Billiard with a taper acrylic stem looks amazing after the work on it. The briar is clean and the blast really came alive. The rich brown stains gave the finish a sense of depth with the polishing and waxing. The finish really popped. I put the stem back on the bowl and buffed the pipe with Blue Diamond on the buffing wheel using a light touch on the briar. I gave the bowl and the stem multiple coats of carnauba wax on the buffing wheel. I buffed the pipe with a clean buffing pad to raise the shine. I hand buffed the pipe with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The finished Castello Old Antiquari Swan Neck Billiard really is a beauty and feels great in the hand and looks very good. Give the finished pipe a look in the photos below. The dimensions of the pipe are Length: 6 inches, Height: 2 inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 ¼ inches, Chamber diameter: ¾ of an inch. The weight of the pipe is 46 grams/1.62 ounces. I will soon be putting this pipe on the rebornpipes store in the Italian Pipe Makers section. Restoring a Piece of Danish Pipe History – a Suhr Kobenhavn Bruyere Extra Dublin

The next pipe on the table is an interesting short stemmed, sandblast Dublin that I found in a display cabinet. We purchased it from an Antique Mall in Lincoln City, Oregon, USA on 08/24/2024. The pipe is stamped on the underside of the shank Suhr [over] Kobenhavn. That is followed by Bruyere [over] EXTRA. The band covers some of the next portion of the stamp but it looks like it reads By Hand [over] a shape number beginning with 9. The band is stamped Birmingham Sterling Silver and has a T date stamp. The shank is cracked and I assume that someone put an English band on it that in no way reflects the country of origin. The bowl had a thick cake and lava overflowing on the rim top and inner edge. The sandblast finish was dirty with grime in the sandblast. The stem is worn and has been cut off and a button shaped at the end. There was no bother taken on the slot and it is uneven and rough. It leaves a short snorter of a pipe that does not quite look right.  I took photos of the pipe before I started my clean up work. I have included them below. I took a photo of the rim top, bowl and the surfaces of the stem to give a sense of the condition of the pipe. The bowl is out of round toward the front of the bowl. There was a thick lava coat on the rim edges or top filling in the sandblast. The stem is heavily oxidized, calcified and dirty. It has also been cut off a bit crooked and the button is not clean. The Sterling Silver shank band is dented, scratched and oxidized. It has also been cut at an angle.I took photos of the stamping on the sides of the shank. It is clear and readable and read as noted above. I took a photo of the pipe with the stem removed. It is definitely dirty and very oxidized on the shank extension and the stem.While I was looking at the pipe in the Antique Mall I looked up the Suhr brand on Pipephil’s helpful site where he has some great resources on stamping (http://pipephil.eu/logos/en/logo-s13.html). I had a fleeting memory of the name but I could not give it any data. I read about the brand and looked at the shape of the pipe shown on the site which was very similar to the pipe I was looking at. I was pretty convinced that the pipe at the shop was made by the same Suhr as shown on Pipephil’s site. The photos included also gave a clear picture of what the original stem may have looked like on the pipe when it left the maker. I bought it based on that information and added it to the purchase.

I have added the information, photos and a screen capture of the section below for the purpose of putting the information together with the restoration. Suhr’s Pibemageri (pipe workshop) was owned by Teophil Suhr. Poul Rasmussen († 1967), Svend Axel Celius or Sven Knudsen used to produce the pipes proposed in the shop.

It is not established the red-white dot is Suhr’s original logo. it may be the symbol used by Poul Rasmussen himself. See also: Anne Julie (widow of Poul Rasmussen)

When I got home and before I began working on the pipe I reread PipePhil’s info included above and turned to Pipedia for more (https://pipedia.org/wiki/Suhr%27s_Pibemageri). I quote from that site below.

Suhr’s Pibemageri was a pipemaking workshop started by Teofil Suhr in Copenhagen central to the birth of the modern Danish pipe. When Sixten Ivarsson, then a debt collector newly moved to Copenhagen, broke his pipe, it was to Suhr’s he went for a repair, only to find a broken lathe and no pipemaker. Soon after, he was working as the foreman at Suhr’s, where, among others, Peter Micklson got his start and Sven Axel Celius learned pipemaking from Poul Rasmussen and his then foreman Sven Knudsen. Pipes from Suhr’s were stamped with the workshop name Suhr, and on occasion carried the same red and white dot used by Anne Julie to this day.

While it is said to be a disagreement with Suhr’s that led Ivarsson to leave for Stanwell, and all of these names went on to greater fame in later years, it would be impossible to overstate the importance of Suhr’s to the evolution of the modern smoking pipe.

I googled Suhr to find more information. I found some on the Smokingpipes.com web site (https://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/suhr/). I quote the information on the brand there.

Suhr is a venerable name, tracing back to the 1940s in Copenhagen, where it was primarily a pipe repair shop before picking up pipe manufacturing. Sixten Ivarsson served as foreman there in the 1940s before moving on to Stanwell. When he left, Poul Rasmussen became foreman and made Suhr pipes until his death in 1967. His widow, Anne Julie, started making pipes at that time, and eventually trained other carvers, including Tom Eltang.

The grandson of famous pipe makers Poul Rasmussen and Anne Julie, Johannes Rasmussen trained with Tom Eltang for years before carrying on the Suhr name.

When Johannes decided to pursue pipe making, he went full circle in his family history and contacted Tom Eltang for an apprenticeship. While at the Eltang workshop, he learned the basics and began exploring his own creative voice, expanding his artistic reach until confident about breaking out on his own.

It was natural to resurrect the Suhr name for his pipes. Johannes credits his grandparents and Tom Eltang for his inspiration, and they were all part of Suhr history. He maintains a keen understanding of his place in the historical legacy of pipe making, in which he stands on the shoulders of giants.

I also turned to another site listed by google called Worthpoint. The site also showed a Suhr pipe and the description is very similar to mine (https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/bruyere-extra-suhr-kobenhavn-hand-1864270360). I quote the site’s description below.

No cracks or rim chips. Reads “2085 BRUYERE EXTRA SUHR KOBENHAVN BY HAND ” on the shank.

The shape number 2085 is the only difference in the stamp. The order of the stamp is slightly different but the data is the same. From that it helped me interpret what is partially hidden under the silver band. I now knew that it read By Hand and the shape number starting 9.

Now it was time to work on the pipe. I started my work by reaming the cake and debris in the bowl. I reamed it with a PipNet pipe reamer using the 1st and 2nd cutting heads to remove the cake. I took it back to bare briar. I followed that by scraping out what remained on the bowl walls with a Savinelli Fitsall Pipe Knife. I sanded the walls smooth with 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around a piece of dowel. The bowl walls looked very good with no burn damage or checking on the walls. I scraped the rim to with the Fitsall knife to remove the thick lava coat. I went over it with a brass bristle brush to clean out the grooves in the sandblast rim and it was starting to look better.I cleaned out he internals of the shank, mortise and airway in the shank and the stem with alcohol, cotton swabs and pipe cleaners. I hard started shaping the new stem (an older worn Stanwell saddle stem seemed a fitting one to use). I paused to clean it at this point.I scrubbed the dirty bowl with a tooth brush and undiluted Murphy’s Oil Soap. I rinsed it off with warm water and dried it with a cotton cloth. It did a great job removing the oils and tars and overall the bowl looked much better. I touched up the outer edge where it was worn and the top of the rim with a Maple Stain Pen. The colour was a perfect match. The only frustration was the burn damage on the front of the inner edge now really is visible. I think I will need to go back and work on that area. I worked over the inner edge again with a folded piece of 220 grit sandpaper to give it a bevel and try to minimize the damage. Once finished I restained it with the Maple Stain Pen.I rubbed the briar down with Before & After Restoration Balm. I worked it into the sandblast finish with my fingertips and a shoe brush. The product works to clean, enliven and preserve the briar. I let it sit for 10 minutes then I buffed it with a cotton cloth to deepen the shine. The briar really comes alive with the balm. The blog is slightly out chronological order as I worked on the stem fit before I worked on the bowl but I decided to write it this way. Using your imagination walk with me through the stem fitting process. I had to search for a stem in my collection of stems that would work with this pipe. I wanted a saddle stem that had some more length on it and would require a minimum of shaping and contouring. I had a tired older Stanwell saddle stem that I think looked very similar to the Suhr in the photos on PipePhil. I think it is quite appropriate to use a Stanwell stem on this Danish piece of history. I would need to reshape the saddle portion and clean up the tenon but the stem would do the trick. Before I cleaned up the pipe I ft the stem to the shank to get a sense of what it looked like. It would take a lot of shaping and sanding to get the fit right but I liked the look. Whoever had banded the pipe in the past had put the band on crooked so the shank end was no longer straight It was off to the left side and the stem would not face against the shank well. Since I was going to make a mess with the stem I decided to do the fitting work before I cleaned up the pipe. I used a Dremel and a Sanding drum to shape the saddle portion to fit the follow of the shank. It took a bit of work but I was able to get a rough fit. I heated the band with my heat gun to loosen the band. It was tightly in place. I used some acetone to try and it to failed. It seemed that the band had been glued in place on the shank with epoxy during the repair. It refused to move! So, the Danish Pipe would be permanently joined with a British Sterling band from Birmingham made in either 1943 or 1968. The stamping on the band was not altogether clear though it was a T. The only I am sure of is that it was added after market as a repair using a band that was handy. Left with that unmovable nature I had to work with what I had. I used a topping board with 220 grit sandpaper and hand sanding to flatten the shank end and square it up for a better stem fit. The stem fit better against the shank. Now I needed to sand the sides to shape them to match the shank curves. I worked over the stem with 220 grit sandpaper while I sat on my front porch. I shaped it in place on the shank just to make sure the fit was right. The shape of the shank appears to be oval but it is flat on the bottom and domed on the top. It took a lot of sanding and shaping to get the fit right but the photos show where it is after much sanding. Chronologically it was at this point in the process that I removed the stem and went back and scrubbed the bowl to clean up the mess. I cleaned it and used the Balm on it. While it sat doing its magic I started the polishing process on the stem. I sanded it with 320-3500 grit sanding pads. I wiped it down after each sanding pad with an Obsidian Oil impregnated cloth. It really began to take on a finished look.I polished the vulcanite stem with micromesh sanding pads – 1500-12000 grit pads. I wiped it down with Obsidian Oil after each sanding pad. I used Before & After Pipe Stem Polish – both Fine and Extra Fine to further polish the stem. I gave it a final coat of Obsidian Oil and let it dry. This beautiful Suhr Kobenhvn Bruyere Extra Zulu with a newly fit saddle looks amazing. The briar is clean and the finish really came alive. The rich brown stains gave the finish a sense of depth with the polishing and waxing. I put the stem back on the bowl and buffed the pipe with Blue Diamond on the buffing wheel using a light touch on the briar. I gave the bowl multiple coats of Conservator’s Wax and the stem multiple coats of carnauba wax on the buffing wheel. I buffed the pipe with a clean buffing pad to raise the shine. I hand buffed the pipe with a microfiber cloth to deepen the shine. The finished Suhr Kobenhvn Zule really is a beauty and feels great in the hand and looks very good. Give the finished pipe a look in the photos below. The dimensions of the pipe are Length: 5 ¼ inches, Height: 2 inches, Outside diameter of the bowl: 1 ¼ inches, Chamber diameter: ¾ of an inch. The weight of the pipe is 28 grams/.95 ounces. This beautiful pipe will reside in my collection at least for a while as I enjoy this piece of Danish Pipe History. If the condition of the pipe when it was found is any indicator, the pipe should be a great smoker. Thanks for reading this blog and my reflections on the pipe while I worked on it.
